Very informative

Taught me and my wife a lot about Florida we did not know - and she was born there! Loved the book and the structure, but it lost a star in the repetition of the questions, such as, 'do you know this? How about this? Well, what about this? and this? Okay but do you know the answer to this? No? well, you're about to find out! here goes! '

Of course, its not exactly said like that but it certainly felt like that.

Narration was excellent

Learning

I feel like I've learnt so much about Florida. I came into this book not knowing anything at all about Florida, and now I can list off numerous tidbits about the sunshine state. It was pretty entertaining and fun to listen to. Well worth a listen.

And the rest is history.

Such an excellent idea for a series, exploring a topic by finding and relating a plethoera of little known facts in an amusing, easy to absorb way and helping to reinforce them with a short quiz after each section. This did-you-know romp around the Sunshine Start has sections on Florida in general, pop culture, film, attractions, inventions and ideas, the supernatural and spooky and, finally, sport. Really excellent for lovers of trivia and, especially those who enjoy taking part in quiz contests. Did you know, for example, that it is against the law to wear a strapless dress there if you are a man? And that the Backstreet Boys, formed in Florida, became the biggest selling boy band in history?

Narration by Derek Newman is pleasantly modulated, clear and an easy listen. Paced perfectly to allow the facts to filter threw, his voice carried a hint of upbeat humour. The only difficulty is with the translation from written text to voiced performance: whilst it is fine to read a written heading immediately repeated as the opening line of what is to come, when read aloud it feels like repetition and unecessisary. A slight editing of the original text would, in this case, have been beneficial.

Interesting, quirky, often funny, sometimes just a wee bit scary, and a great way to learn a lot quite effortlessly, I can really recommend this book to all fact seekers whether for competition entries or simple fact gathering for fun. My thanks to the rights holder who, when I requested a copy of The Great Book of Florida, freely gifted me a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. Read, enjoy and don't forget: if you for your elephant to a parking meter, you have to pay the tariff. Oh, and no singing in a bathing costume!
