Summary
In teeming Victorian London, where lavish wealth and appalling poverty live side by side, Edward Pierce charms the most prominent of the well-to-do as he cunningly orchestrates the crime of the century. Who would suspect that a gentleman of breeding could mastermind the daring theft of a fortune in gold? Who could predict the consequences of making the extraordinary robbery aboard the pride of England's industrial era, the mighty steam locomotive? Based on fact, as lively as legend, and studded with all the suspense and style of a modern fiction master, here is a classic caper novel set a decade before the age of dynamite - yet nonetheless explosive....
Michael Crichton wrote and directed the screen adaptation of The Great Train Robbery, starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland.

An exciting factual rollercoaster.
This is an excellent book by the Late Great Michael Crichton. This book is well researched and such an interesting story. I read it years ago and just had to relive the book again through Audible. Highly recommended.

Oceans 11 in a museum
A splendid caper which paints a vivid picture of Victorian Britain and the characters involved in the greatest crime of its age. Compelling narrative and equally compelling narrator make this a joy to listen to.

The Great Download
Michael Kitchen reads this book well, and it is one of Michael Crichton's better books from the 1970s. For enthusiasts of Crichton, of Victoriana, of true crime, this will undoubtedly appeal. For those who just want an entertaining listen, then it will not disappoint.

The excellent mixture of fact and fiction
It’s one of Michael Crichtons shorter stories, but is a fascinating tale that hasn’t seeped into the British consciousness in the same way as its more modern counterpart.
It’s a story worth hearing, a film worth seeing and history at its most appealing.

Very entertaining
I didn’t know what to expect from this novel, not previously having heard of Michael Crichton. I was drawn more by the fact that it was narrated by Michael kitchen. It turned out that these two Michaels together were a great combination. It’s a very curious book and could be regarded as flawed in several ways, but the overall effect was quite fascinating and entertaining and I really enjoyed it. Michael Kitchen’s narration was wonderful, as ever. Highly enjoyable.

A great listen
At first it was hard to keep up with all the old slang, however, it is a great book that I stumbled on by accident.
The narration took time to get used to but, as the book went on i became
more in tune with it.
Have to say, the picture it paints of old Victorian London amongst the classes, the way they interacted and used each other, their living conditions and their never dull slang, is quite amazing.
What a place and time it must have been to live in.
Fully recommended as a listen.

Clever, fun and edifying.
Wonderfull narration of a cleverly structured story that entertains and informs. I’ve learnt more about gritty victorian London than most history books suffered about the place and period. Great stuff.
