About this listen

In fifteen short chapters, Chris Hedges astonishes us with his clear and cogent argument against war, not on philosophical grounds or through moral arguments, but in an irrefutable stream of personal encounters with the victims of war, from veterans and parents to gravely wounded American serviceman who served in the Iraq War, to survivors of the Holocaust, to soldiers in the Falklands War, among others. Hedges reported from Sarajevo, and was in the Balkans to witness the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In 2002 he published War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, which The Los Angeles Times described as "the best kind of war journalism . . . bitterly poetic and ruthlessly philosophical" and the New York Times called "a brilliant, thoughtful, timely, and unsettling book."

In the twenty years since, Hedges has not wanted to write another book on the subject of war—until now, with the outbreak of war in Ukraine. It is important again to be reminded who are the victors of the spoils of war and of other unerring truths, not only in this war but in all modern wars, where civilians are always the main victims, and the tools and methods of war are capable of so much destruction it boggles the mind. This book is an unflinching indictment of the horror and obscenity of war by one of our finest war correspondents.

Should be mandatory reading in schools

Written before all hell let loose in Gaza and the meat grinder of the Ukraine had reached its industrial scale of output, its clear that this cautionary tale is not being received by those with the power to stop the war machine. So we must wrest the powers back from them and make example of them so that they become the lesson, the cautionary tale that humanity will not let the monsters murder our children in their wars of choice. Thank you Chris Hedges.

Being 70, lifelong learning.

War is a dead-end, a cul-de-sac of faith in humanism enclosed by cultural segregation and occupied by the innocently ignorant dreaming of Peace.
love always

Powerful. A must read

This book should is a must read for people that continuously and blindly believe the war narrative, never fully comprehending the true impact of war. It gives detailed insight into the horrible nature of war.

Powerful and Essential Reading

Chris Hedges has written a powerful book about the evils associated with war - exposing the lies of the military complex and greedy politicians and corporate bodies that destroy lives and communities at whim. He is a prophet of truth and a humanitarian , independent and free thinker who confronts and exposes the real evil that is inherent in all wars. Though a short book this is well worth reading, digesting and re-reading again, to embed the salient points of Hedges wisdom and experience. We have so few writers out there with the talent and bravery to expose the matrix of lies being fed to us by governments. If we are to create a better world for the future then more and more people need to take on board the messages of this book and find their own personal courage to stand up to say no to war and to demand that those guilty of war crimes are brought to justice. This booked is for those willing to engage in independent thought and who are prepared to wake up to the myths and lies we are told about War. An important must read for those who care about justice and peace.

Courageously Honest & profound

Chris describes war in all of its horrendous horror and trauma, stripping away the lies we are told , laying it bare , I was unable to stop listening , knowing I will have changed a little after the reading of this book.If only history lessons in school , teaching our children in high school about World Wars were replaced by this one book. The future generations might actually have a chance.Thank you Chris for your work and honesty and above all courage to be actually a Hero , the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.
