Summary
It is 1943. Two huge German guns in the grim, impregnable fortress on a huge beautiful island off the coast of Turkey are having a devastating impact on Allied shipping and preventing the evacuation of hard-pressed British troops from the nearby island of Kheros. The Germans are poised to overrun and unless the guns can be put out of action within a matter of days, a thousand men will die.
All previous attempts to attack the fortress of Navarone have failed. It is time for one last desperate throw of the dice. And so a select Subversive Operations commando unit, led by the famous pre-war mountaineer Captain Keith Mallory, launches a daring and very possibly suicidal raid.
This BBC Radio 2 dramatisation, starring Toby Stephens and Michael Williams, brings to exhilarating life one of the greatest adventure stories of World War II.

Pimpernal to Rhubarb.
Read this book a long time ago and have enjoyed the movie numerous times. The BBC have done an interesting adaptation of this story and have kept the main facets of McLean's tale, necessary I suppose, considering it has been condensed into just over two hours. There were some character differentiations, and changes to the original story which the listener might, or might not like, but overall the story delivered. The jury might be out on the choice of music, obviously Greek, but perhaps could have been better.

ENJOYABLE PERFORMANCE
Thoroughly enjoyable drama. Excellent acting skills from all. Quite gruesome storyline but then, war is. I have not read any Alister MacLean books, but I have seen most of the MacLean films full of action & enjoyed them all. This audiobook is the deal.

Brilliant
Gripping from the start, well produced (bbc as always) great performances all round. Even if your not too into military themed things this is a great adaptation

Dramatization NOT a book reading
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Toby Stephens?
I chose this book because I like Toby Stephens as a narrator. I should have checked the small print though because it is a dramatization, which I don't like, and a fairly clunky one at that. It still has Toby Stephens in the leading role, but even his talents are stretched against the sound effects and suspect Greek accent from other cast members.
If this book were a film would you go see it?
It is a great book (the film doesn't do it justice) which I would recommend to anyone. This dramatization isn't great, a straight reading by Toby Stephens would have been better.
