About this listen

The 15th century saw the crown of England change hands seven times as the great families of England fought to the death for power, majesty and the right to rule.

The Hollow Crown completes Dan Jones' epic history of medieval England, and describes how the Plantagenets tore themselves apart to be finally replaced by the Tudors.

Some of the greatest heroes and villains in British history were thrown together in these turbulent times: Henry V, whose victory at Agincourt and prudent rule at home marked the high point of the medieval monarchy; Edward IV, who was handed his crown by the scheming soldier Warwick the Kingmaker, before their alliance collapsed into a fight to the death; and the last Plantagenet, Richard III, who stole the throne and murdered his own nephews, the Princes in the Tower. Finally, the Tudors arrived - but even their rule was only made certain in the 1520s, when Henry VIII ruthlessly hunted down his family's last remaining enemies.

In the midst this tumult, chivalry was reborn, the printing press arrived and the Renaissance began to flourish. With vivid descriptions of the battle of Towton, where 28,000 men died in a single morning, and the Battle of Bosworth Field, at which Richard III was hacked down, this is the real story behind Shakespeare's famous history plays.

History by a true historian

There are so many celebrity historians around now however Dan Jones is one of the best. He brings history to life!

As my favourite period in history by far, I thought I knew all about the Wars Of The Roses but there was such much detail in this book I now know even more which is great.

You’re a bit of a star Mr Jones - not only do you write incredibly detailed and interesting books, you are one of the best narrators I’ve heard!

Thoroughly enjoyable experience all round. Even if you are not into history, you will find the Plantagenets a fascinating story.

Dan Jones is a national treasure

I have listened to this twice now and I love it. A really good insight into the events of the 15th Century. If you know nothing about the war of the roses or even if you know a lot, this book is well worth a read.

A Ctowning Achievement

An absorbing and thoroughly worthy successor to Dan Jones's excellent book on the Plantagenets, with a very clear narrative line and some thought-provoking analytical insights. Leaves me wanting to read/hear much more from this author.

Histories Wars of the Roses explained

loved this book. enthralled by the storey telling. I now know this part of history (at least from one story tellers view point).
Stars for treating women as human: 4 -compared to many male writers, he place women in history and did not write then out. you got the knowledge of women as human beings and active, willful players in the game of power, not just pawns. However, the use of language where the views of people are referred to as the 'view of men' wrote women back into invisibility, alas

A clear history of a complex topic...

This is an admirably clear and concise account of the subject matter, rendering a sometimes convoluted and confusing history relatively easy to follow - unlike some other histories of the period. It's well read by the author, and an enjoyable listen. The only negative, for me, is the other side of the same coin, insofar as Dan Jones' account, IMHO, glosses over certain historical debates and does not, perhaps, always go into enough depth. At times this means the book doesn't quite satisfy, for instance in describing Richard III's death at Bosworth without properly investigating the nature of his defeat or the reasons for it. On the other hand, by avoiding controversy and sticking to a clear central narrative, Jones does succeed in producing an eminently listenable and easy-to-follow history that is also consistently engaging.

Compulsive listen

I very much enjoyed Dan Brown's disentanglement of this superficially well known period of English history. Like many people I have a reasonably good working knowledge of the internecine contest for power, so it was with great enjoyment that I listened to the teasing out of motives and consequences. I found the section on Richard III's usurpation of power particularly interesting.

Praise also for Dsn Brown's reading. Often authors cannot read aloud their own work with grest success; not so Mr Brown. He's a very comfortable listen on every way. Many thanks!
