Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
A horrific crime that defies ordinary explanation. A rookie FBI agent in dangerous, uncharted territory. An extraordinary hero for the ages.
Odessa Hardwicke's life is derailed when she's forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devasted, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn't the tragedy itself-it's the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent's body after his death.
Questioning her future with the FBI and her sanity, Hardwicke accepts a low-level assignment to clear out the belongings of a retired agent in the New York office. What she finds there will put her on the trail of a mysterious figure named John Silence, a man of enormous means who claims to have been alive for centuries, and who is either an unhinged lunatic, or humanity's best and only defense against unspeakable evil.

A very good book. If you enjoy thrillers with a bit of supernatural you will enjoy this read.

Interesting story, irritating narration
The story was interesting but I struggled with the sibulant sound of the narrator so abandoned the story half way through

A good listen that could’ve been a great listen but…
The female FBI agent was so annoying!! She constantly questioned why when she’d been told several times. She was judgmental, argumentative, arrogant, almost to the point of stamping her feet like a child; yet she was supposed to be a highly intelligent, hotshot agent. As you can probably tell, I didn’t like this character much.
It was a shame because the storyline was very enjoyable and exciting from start to finish, there was something happening. It was action filled and would easily transform onto the big screen. Just without her attitude…😁

GDT’s Marvel Fan-fic
Thoroughly enjoyable story that goes at a great clip. Basically Guillermo Del Torro’s Doctor Strange fan-fiction. A horror action thriller perfect for a holiday read/listen.

Overly familiar, disappointingly naff.
Far from original storyline combining Denzel Washingtons Fallen and Preston Child novels, but not bettering them. The main character, a young FBI agent, is totally unbelievable, amateurish and overly emotive for someone in her position, you end up really annoyed by her. The narrator is a little over acting the part, over stressing the drama in a very American way. That's the biggest disappointment really, you expect the involvement of del Toro to bring a difference, a lateral approach to narrative and characters, but there is none of this, its a story on rails, predictable and less original than it wants you to believe.

Del Toro? Really?
Expected so much more. This book was more hack than a penny dreadful. Why, Guillermo, why?
