About this listen

In their remarkable debut political thriller, Tom Watson, former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, and Imogen Robertson open the doors to The House, a place of ambition, hope, friendship...and betrayal.

Once allies, Labour MP Owen McKenna and Conservative Minister Philip Bickford now face each other across the House of Commons as bitter enemies. Then the reappearance of a figure from their past forces them to confront the choices that led to the tragic downfall of their former housemate, Jay.

Late one night, Owen receives a visit from a lobbyist who promises to protect him from the consequences of his actions in exchange for one, small favour - or to have his reputation and career utterly destroyed if he refuses. But that favour will sell out everything Owen believes in.

As rivals gather and whispers of wrongdoing fill the corridors of Westminster, it's clear that someone knows the truth about Jay's Icarus-like fall from grace. Now, the former friends must face one terrible truth....

Someone is responsible, and a reckoning is overdue.

"Politics red in tooth and claw. Watson and Robertson capture, with scalpel precision, the neurotic allure of the Westminster power game." (Luke Jennings)

Regardless of your politics this is a great story. A reasonably balanced depiction of those on both sides of the fence (wherever you might see it) and an excellent 'who dun it' by any measure!
Well written and over far to quickly. I am sorry that Tom Watson has stepped away from politics though his reasons bleed clear from the narrative. All massively topical of course though the interest doesn't depend on that.
In any event he is a welcome author and I hope this is the beginning of his career in political fiction. I look forward to the next. Obviously a good writing partnership, the characters are well drawn and interesting.
Recommended.

A really good tale, labyrinthine and engaging,

Life in Westminster - could be interesting book if you really love British politics. You do need to concentrate though due to the many characters. Really hard to review this book - seems like not much happens (even at the end) but when you think back to the individuals, I suppose a lot happens. Different.

Complicated

A well played-out story with an insight into the Westminster bubble. I know it's fiction but aspects felt uncomfortably plausible.

An intriguing story.

I liked his first book but I have abandoned this halfway through too slow found it very boring which is a shame because I was looking forward to reading this book

Overall, I was disappointed. It was not the political inside thriller that I hoped for.
It was one of those books I stuck with to see how it evolved, rather than something I was enjoying.
Not recommended.

Not my favourite
