About this listen

‘Totally gripping and atmospheric. This hypnotic timeslip about witches is compulsive reading. Breathtaking and beautifully written… Will stay with the reader long after the last page.’ Bestselling author of The Witch’s Tree, Elena Collins

Now: When Adrianna arrives at the small, run-down cottage, near the sea in rural Norfolk, she can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. Here she can forget her life in the city, and the problems she’s left behind there, at least for a while.

But – like Adrianna herself – the cottage holds secrets. And when Adrianna finds a mysterious bundle of notes hidden under a floorboard, she can’t shake the idea that they’ve been waiting for her. Especially when – in the rambling, overgrown garden – she then finds a strangely-carved stone, drawing her into a centuries-old mystery…

1646: Between her work as the village midwife and the medicines she sells from her cottage, Ursula has no need for a man. But this ideal leaves her unprotected in a world where just one accusation of witchcraft can mean certain death. So when she catches the eye of a powerful new local doctor, she must use every part of her cunning, or risk becoming his prisoner…

Can the two women – their paths bound by place and history – each find the keys to their own destiny?

Utterly gripping timeslip historical fiction, perfect for fans of The Witch’s Tree, The Essex Serpent and Weyward.

Bestselling authors love The House of the Witch:

I was completely hooked by this brilliant timeslip novel. Unmissable!’ Louise Douglas

A haunting tale of one woman’s struggle to be independent at a time when strong women were seen as a threat and dealt with accordingly. The House of the Witch gripped me from the first page and refused to let go.’ Jenni Keer

‘A page turning historical novel that kept me guessing until the very end.’ Rachel Burton

Throughly enjoyed the book which I bought on the Daily Deal. Would have happily used a credit.
The theme linking the two main characters was cleverly linked resulting in a satisfying conclusion.
The historical detail was fascinating.
Excellent narration.

Great ending

The storyline and parallels between the 17th century and the 21st century were thought provoking. A controlling man is still able to control a woman today, but in the 17th century women had no redress. Thank goodness I live now and not in the 1640s.

A very enjoyable listen.

Great story, sadly spoilt by 2 factors, the wet modern day heroine and narrator. Overall loved the story and will seek out further books by this author.
I have listened to many books narrated by Antonia Beamish and this was not great. Once I noticed the strange pauses between words it really grated on me.

Compelling Story

Women were treated as possessions. If a woman stood up for herself she was treated as a witch. Very interesting book

One woman knowing her own mind and worth in 1600s and another discovering her own in 2020s.

Feminine empowerment!

I like reading about witches, though my fictional witches have to be believable and based on historical facts, and this book absolutely fulfilled my wishes. It is set in two timelines - present day and 1646 - and both are equally interesting.. There's a creepy old house next to a graveyard and a hidden diary. The two women in the story are interesting characters, though I wanted to scream at Addie and tell her to open her eyes!! Clare Merchant is a new author to me but I'll definitely be perusing her back catalogue. The storyline is gripping and I shed a tear or two at the injustice suffered by women during history.

I enjoyed the narration by Antonia Beamish, who brought it all to life.

Historical Witchy Story

Great story, wish I’d have read it instead. Sometimes the voice actors don’t match the voice that you would create for the characters. Bad accents too.

The awful injustice that women had to endure at the hands of disposable men!
