Summary
There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. But there are times when it takes remarkable strength and resilience to find it.
Any good memoir requires depth, honesty, and a willingness to get vulnerable—and that’s exactly what Julia Duthie has done with The House on Dogbone St.
As she peels back the layers of a complex and tumultuous childhood, she reveals the remarkable journey that made her the woman she is today.
With her mother lost in her own world of depression and her father largely absent, Julia and her siblings were forced to take care of themselves, facing more difficulties than any family should have to endure. As the little girl grew into a teenager, her resilience and determination blossomed, and no matter the obstacle she was faced with, she always found a way to survive.
Not one of Julia’s siblings reached adulthood unscarred, and many of the difficulties they faced added fuel to the fire of an already chaotic household. Faced with violence, neglect, and a lack of protection or support from her parents, Julia learned the art of turning her scars into strengths.
As teachers and neighbors looked on with sympathy and understanding, they shone a light of hope toward her, allowing her to see her way out of the darkness, and blossom into a strong and determined adult.
A remarkable tale of endurance and resilience, Julia’s story is a glorious reminder that no matter how dark the circumstances, there truly can be a life of joy, fulfillment, and love waiting for you at the end of it.
At once inspirational and engaging, this beautiful memoir has something for every listener. No matter what your own story holds, you’re sure to find reflections you relate to and gain a deeper understanding of the different stories that may be playing out behind closed doors.

Absolutely fascinating.
I was fortunate enough to know Julia for five years and knew of some of the early years through family conversations. This is truly a fascinating insight to no only Julia’s history but also those many misunderstood emotions that I perceived at the time as rather strange! I’m so grateful to have known her family and at one time been a small part of it.
This is worth hearing and so much thought and time has gone into creating this insight. Thank you Julia
