Summary

Perhaps the greatest poem of the Western world, The Iliad tells the story of 50 critical days towards the end of the Trojan war. Achilles has quarrelled with Agamemnon and sulks in his tent, while Hector brings his Trojans to the brink of victory; but fate will have the last word.

Great Translation and Pace

Lesser keeps it well paced, not too fast or too monotone, and switches his tone for each character, making it easy to remember who’s talking during longer speeches when the mind is prone to wander. Especially liked his mourning Priam. The translation is accessible, but doesn’t detract from the Greek, and perfectly captures scenes dynamically. Good for students and classics enthusiasts alike!!!

Phenomenal

This review goes for the Odyssey too, one of the greatest stories ever told, beautifully translated.
I don't think there is a better person in the world who could have read these ultimate classics better than Anton Lesser (You may know him
from Game of Thrones or more lately, Andor)

Could not recommend enough, currently the Iliad and Odyssey are the only audiobooks I have listened to multiple times.

A good listen

The narration and writing of this ancient story is a good and reasonably-easy listen. The old tales are the best, but it's not often that they can be 'read' and digested.

Enjoyed this so much

So much easier to listen, for the pronunciation of names and places. This is a great translation and so well read, clearly and with feeling.

Epic poem made easy and entertaining to listen to

Anton Lesser is a wonderful narrator who really brings the story to life. His crisp delivery, sense of well timed drama, expressive voice and characterisation is superb. It made this so easy and enjoyable to listen to and brought archaic Greece to life. If you are looking for a version of the Iliad to listen to, you won't find better than this. Excellent!

Legendary

This story is amazing, a tale of heroes and god's, the Iliad is a timeless Greek legend. Anton Lesser does ana amazing job of narrating it, at first I was skeptical of him but his narration grew on me and I wouldn't listen to it any other way now.

The Iliad.

This is the third time I’ve visited this book. I first read this at school, many years ago, as part of a classic civilisations class. Then again, on audible about 10 years ago (Stanley Lombardo narrating-very good).
Every translation I’ve heard leans with a heavy bias (in my opinion) towards the Greeks, which as modern propaganda teaches us, colours the true events in such a way as to question what we read as believable. There is no doubt Troy was sacked, but was it actually ‘a damn close run thing’ ?
We’ll probably never know, but whatever, this is a fantastic book & Anton Lesser performs admirably.
Recommended.
