About this listen

Kenneth Cranham and Alex Lanipekun star in these fifteen hard-hitting crime dramas

Chalk and cheese coppers Max Matthews and Sean Armitage are from different generations and different worlds, but together they make a remarkable team. In this powerful, unconventional police procedural, we join the detective duo in the interview room, as they practise their unique style of interrogation in a bid to extract a confession.

These fifteen dramas all focus on a different suspect, each with their own story and version of events. Among the varied characters we hear from are Rod, a Premier League footballer accused of rape; Jermaine, a ruthless gang leader; Marc, an ex-policeman suspected of domestic violence; and Beverley, who has come into the station to report her elderly father as missing. As the details of their crimes are revealed, we get under their skin, and come to understand what motivated them to do what they did.

Compelling and compassionate, these dramas probe some of today’s most troubling moral issues, inviting us to face hard truths, but holding out the possibility of redemption. With razor-sharp dialogue and characters that feel entirely authentic, they’ll linger in your mind long after you’ve finished listening.

Detective stories getting to the gritty ‘why’ and ‘truths’

The Interrogation”, written by Roy Williams.
Main narrative performers are the voices of Kenneth Cranham and Alex Lanipekun.

This BBC Radio commissioned series of less than 45 minute each episode is superbly narrated by every and all the characters.

Police detectives Matthews and Armitage pride themselves on their interrogation techniques and encounter many characters in their interview room and try to get to each gritty ‘why’ and each ‘truth’.

A great series of contemporary gritty stories depicting various aspects of the interrogated & interrogators career and personal lives.

I believe each 45 minute story could be listened to independently and still delight, intrigue and captivate the listener.

Simply superb listening material.

Gritty and superbly acted

Most stories I found compelling, one or two were confusing to get Into. Worth hearing for Kenneth Cranham alone, all the cast are excellent and Sean's character develops very well.

Not for everyone

OK the outcomes tend to be rather predictable but love the Max & Shaun double act.

Awesome

Amazing scripts, superbly interpreted by a truly brilliant cast. At one level it's a great police procedural. But overlaying that are the twists and turns of classic detective stories. But these shows give even more with the fantastic relationship, and series building story, between Max and Sean. So much, so clever. But these two interrogators scare me - I will never break the law and hope to get away with it.
