Summary
Meet Jude Valentine. Thirty something, half French, talented musician and frontman of the seminal band Valentine’s Day. Jude is troubled by his childhood, and a reoccurring dream that seems to predict the course of his life.
He is a decade deep into both his life as a Rockstar as well as a loveless and violent marriage to Alex Morgan, who prevents him from leaving with threats to “Do what his father did”. We chance across Jude’s path on a night out, a night where the world-weary Rockstar find’s himself enchanted by Sophie Mia Darling, She of the Karaoke Glow.
In this reimagining of the myths of the Norse god Boldr and legendary Greek musician Orpheus, we flash forwards and backwards along Jude’s timeline, seeing the events and meeting the cast of characters that led him to his current position in life. We also glimpse the worlds beyond our world, and the Pookas – or pagan gods – who live there, pulling strings and interfering in the lives of the flesh folk.
Can Jude escape the Pookas, his destiny and his abusive marriage? Is Sophie the key to his redemption? And what of the god that comes and the prophecy of the Norn’s: ‘One will rise, one will fall, one will be transformed’? These are all questions posed by this book and answered over the course of the Karaoke Trilogy.
Meanwhile, our hero stands beneath a streetlamp in the drizzling rain and the moonlight, while She stands in her window bathed in the unearthly glow of a neon sign. This is the moment. This is the beginning or the end. Either way this is the moment.

enjoyed it over all
I enjoyed it but thought the author rambled trying to give too much detail

Absolutely loved it
My favourite from this author so far. This is the first in a series, but it also ties in cleverly with parts of Jack Rabbit’s previous two novels. I can see things tying up nicely across all his books in the long run and these individual little hints and references to characters, etc are the sort of details that make your spine tingle! This book is fun and partly fantastical, but it’s also balanced by real emotion and great humour. The story feels big, but even though it’s complex and wide spanning, it is totally grounded in authentic dialogue and thrilling individual moments. I don’t know how the author does it. The two-person narration is faultless and the subtle sound effects add real atmosphere!
