Very enjoyable

A decent cast of characters sort out a grizzly mystery in a slightly Gothic tale. The main character is a country vicar and it’s so nice to see a parson who doesn’t have loads of secret vice, a failed faith or a penchant for his house keeper. Will definitely continue with the series.

Agatha Christie meets Jane Austen

Dirty work ahead and the Parson and the Doctor team up to bring the evildoer to justice. It canters to a wholly predictable conclusion (Oh c'mon! who else could have done it?), with every clue solved and every loose end neatly ravelled. That said, it is beautifully read and very well written despite rather overdoing the early nineteenth century slang. Enjoyable, if slightly mindless, entertainment, ideal perhaps, for a long journey when you don't want to have to concentrate too hard.

Compelling Historical Crime Fiction

I bought this on a bit of a whim and was wonderfully surprised by the quality of the story. The characters and the relationships between them are beautifully drawn. The details of the crime are unfolded slowly through a some interesting detection. And, finally, the narrator is one of the best I have ever heard. It was a pleasure to listen to him. Highly recommended.
