Summary

Few people in Britain have not heard of the Kray twins, the infamous East End gangsters who murdered in cold blood with barely a backward glance. And more than 30 books, hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, a blockbuster movie, and the spectacular funerals that brought the East End to a standstill have ensured that the twins' fearsome reputation lives on. But what did Ronnie and Reggie sound like? Did their voices match the terrifying violence that made them part of criminal folklore?

One man who knows is writer Robin McGibbon. He collaborated with the twins' elder brother, Charlie, on his autobiography, Me and My Brothers, and was a trusted friend and confidant of Ronnie and Reggie for more than 10 years. McGibbon is the only journalist with all the Krays on tape - Reggie on the phone from prison, Ronnie in Broadmoor, and Charlie living his life for his book. Now you can hear all three brothers talking openly as the public have never heard them talk before.

Fascinating

Really enjoyed listening to this, don’t get me wrong it had the odd boring bits but I think you have to expect that when listening to real recorded phone conversations, hearing all the krays actually talking makes up for it, you learn a lot about them see more than one side to them and because it’s them talking you know it’s real, I love true crime but often wonder how much is put in for effect where as because it’s actually them you don’t feel like that, you question things at times that are said but definitely worth listening to, I got it on sale so it was well worth it in my opinion, I felt it was a little short but maybe that’s a good thing as I was left wanting more instead of feeling a drag

Worth a look.

I found these 'lost interviews' very interesting. I thought there was only written material circulating, along with a brief TV interview that most people may have seen. To listen to the voices in real time is strangely familiar. The 3 brothers all show impeccable manners, I was expecting lots of swearing and hard anecdotes but not a bit of it.

Interesting Perspective on a Well Known Story

Enjoyable listen, nothing too heavy and no mind blowing new revelations but really interesting to hear Ronnie and Reggie's speaking and the authors narrative about the conversations is interesting too.

Poor interviewer makes money from Twins

Disappointing. Interviewer reminded me a lot of Martin Bashir when he asked leading questions to Michael Jackson. Seems culture clash too given the lack of empathy & understanding of the social pressures on both brothers to be violent! Lack of empathy for Reg surviving in a cut throat punitive environment in comparison to Ronnie who lived & enjoyed a therapeutic environment. Ronnie sounded like a child how hard must it have been for Reg to protect him and probably ended up losing his life for. He’s not violent because he’s drugged up & being “cared for”. I honestly think Reg had the patience of a saint as interviewer continually asked questions he didn’t wish to elaborate on. Told listener he had merely a business relationship but tried to get Reg to say they’re friends- came across as disingenuous! Pushed for Reg to bad mouth someone but Reg refused.

Good.

A good listen, nothing groundbreaking but a nice glimpse into the lives of the Krays.
