About this listen

Beauty and glamour meet deception and revenge in this electrifying novel by New York Times best-selling author Amanda Quick.

Investigative apprentice Lyra Brazier, the newest resident of Burning Cove, is unsettled when her boss suddenly goes on a health retreat at an exclusive spa and disappears without another word. Lyra knows something has happened to Raina Kirk, and she is the only one who can track her down. The health spa is known for its luxurious offerings and prestigious clientele, and the wealthy, socialite background Lyra desperately wanted to leave behind is perfect for this undercover job. The agency brings in a partner and bodyguard for her, but she doesn't get the suave, pistol-packing private eye she expected.

Simon Cage is a mild-mannered antiquarian book dealer with a quiet, academic air, and Lyra can't figure out why he was chosen as her partner. But it soon becomes clear when they arrive at the spa and pose as a couple: Simon has a unique gift that allows him to detect secrets, a skill that is crucial in finding Raina.

The unlikely duo falls down a rabbit hole of twisted rumors and missing socialites, discovering that the health spa is a façade for something far darker than they imagined. With a murderer in their midst, Raina isn't the only one in grave danger - Lyra is next.

Well-written, excellent narration but same plot.

I am a fan of this writer because what she does, though fairly limited, she does well and this book is no exception. The writing is well-paced, the incidents, adventures and dramas flow well, the romantic relationship develops well but the whole thing is very similar to previous books and there is nothing new or original in this book. That doesn't make it bad, in fact for me it is one of her better books and I like the brief references to, and appearances of, characters from other books and not just from this series. However I do feel it would be good to have something a bit different. Especially in the rather cliched "villains".
The Narrator was excellent, and I will look out for her again.
Overall 3.5 stars

Good but more of same

The story is good and you can get nicely involved in it but essentially its the same plot as the rest in the series. Honestly how many deranged madmen can be born into one strata of society? Almost every book has an extremely wealthy madman- mostly inherited wealth from important families. I know there is a psychic theme that runs through the stories but psychic is not psychotic and good old fashioned ordinary crime is just as interesting.
The reader is excellent and I will buy more of this series but please find a different angle.

Narration was very good, however the story was just average, not bad, just did not hold my attention...
