In the Land of the Free is where my father Leon Watson worked as a sharecropper, picking cotton in the hot, blistering cotton fields in South Carolina on his knees, on every day except Sunday. And let us not forget my grandmother, whose married name was James and my mother Jessie Watson, who worked in the homes scrubbing floors on their knees and helping raise your children until they were teens.
