Summary

From the Sunday Times top 10 best-selling author of The Silent Sister and Big Lies in a Small Town comes a powerful, gripping and unmissable new novel.

Secrets won't stay silent for ever.

2020. A recently widowed architect moves into the home she and her late husband designed, heartbroken that he will never cross the threshold. But when disturbing things begin to happen, it's clear that someone is sending her a warning. Who is trying to frighten her away and why?

1965. A young white female student becomes involved in the fight for civil rights in North Carolina, falling in love with one of her fellow activists, in a time and place where an interracial relationship must be hidden from family, friends and especially the re-emerging Ku Klux Klan. As tensions rise in the town, she realises not everyone is who they appear to be.

Decades later, past and present are set to collide in the last house on the street....

Wow!

This book has me holding my breath in places, completely captivated! I’ve always been a fan of Diane Chamberlain, but this book blew me away. There were enough clues to keep me guessing, but not quite enough to ruin the complete twist at the end and the characters were so well written that I was able to form a very clear image and opinion of them. Definitely worth a reread.

Amazing 6*

Just to preface this, I give 5 stars to everything unless it is not good so now I’m stuck with the system even though it annoys me!

This was superb. Deep, meaningful, emotional. Beautifully written and excellent narration by Susan Bennett, a favourite of mine. Diane Chamberlain is a relatively new author to me but I’m loving her writing so far.

Such a good story.

I love Diane Chamberlain’s work. She covers difficult subjects that make you think and can be comfortable, while creating characters you invest in. This one is no exception.
