About this listen

Daniel Defoe (1659-1661 to 1731) was an English writer, journalist, and pamphleteer, who gained fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. The Life, Adventures, and Piracies of Captain Singleton is one of his earliest novels. The narrative describes the life of an Englishman, stolen from a well-to-do family as a child and raised by Gypsies, who eventually makes his way to sea.

Editor reviews

Daniel Defoe's Captain Singleton was only published one year after Robinson Crusoe, but in many respects it is a very different novel. Though both books realistically chronicle lives of adventure on the high seas, the protagonist of Singleton is an uneducated rogue, merchant, and pirate whose saga is divided into two distinct parts. Singleton's relationship with a Quaker named William Walters is also central to his first-person narrative.

Eric Brooks performs the audiobook in an almost campy, self-assured style resonant of early 18th-century England. This recording includes a lengthy introduction by Edward Garnett, who calls Captain Singleton a "masterly piece of realism".

...

A tale that wanders as much as its titular character, but very much of its era. The language is obviously outdated and uses terminology that is considered offensive by today's standards. However, an interesting glimpse both at the style of the period and an adventure into foreign lands with a roguish character who has no ties to his English roots, and no moral compass to guide him. The narrator's style is a little distracting and staccato which unfortunately takes the listener often out of the story.

Awful Reader terrible….. I can’t bare it … Eric Brooke’s listen to Janet Suzman and learn how to read !!!!

Why oh why don’t you make sure that the narrator can narrate …. This reader sounds like a 5 year boy reading to his teacher …. I desperately wanted to listen to this but cannot get over his terrible reading it makes u want to cry 😭 it’s one of the worst I have heard so far ….WHY ?? Why do you allow this ?,,,, Audible??? Do you not make enough money to get in proper readers ???
If they do this book again then I’ll be happy to listen to this amazing story …Janet Suzman who reads molly F she’s out of this world !!!!! An amazing narrator but she’s a classic actress I think 🤔
