Summary
Prettiest or ugliest, once you're on the list, you'll never be the same.
It happens every September – the list is posted all over school.
Two girls are picked from each year. One is named the prettiest, one the ugliest.
The girls who are picked become the centre of attention. The girls who aren't are quickly forgotten.
Through the eyes of eight very different girls, THE LIST captures the high school experience with all the struggles of identity, self-esteem, and judgements.
Whether they’re on the list or not, things will never be the same.
Critic reviews
"Vivian explodes the beauty myth in a 'whodunit' that reveals the wars waged every day between girls and their images in mirrors." (E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars)
"Siobhan Vivian is funny and sharp, and she nails the little details and big truths that matter." (Maureen Johnson, Queen of Teen 2012) "Offering a well-differentiated cast of complex characters and a thoughtful focus on femininity, sisterhood, relationships, eating disorders, and what it means to be singled out, Vivian proves that beauty and ugliness aren't always a matter of appearance." (Publishers Weekly)
"Smart, snappy writing." (New York Times Book Review)

Incredible
I loved this book- It's unique ideas grip you and never let you go throughout. I loved the easy to read style of writing and the different points of view. It makes you think of the pressures on a 'popular' teenage girl- being a teenage girl myself. I especially loved - to my surprise- the readers voice. Almost therapeutic, it eased my worries and calmed me. Very good read- I listened to this whole book in a long weekend... utterly gripped, obsessed even.
The one thing that did not satisfy me was the ending- IT WAS TERRIBLE!!! I mean, it left billions of questions unanswered and leaves the reader desperately hopping their would be another book, but no. I am heavily depressed. It makes you question why you read the book in the first place if it was for THAT!
Other than that slight critique .... incredible book and even though the ending is an utter cliff hanger, it is a good read and is definitely worth it.

Dragged. Disappointing.
I realise in retrospect that it may be partly my fault that I didn't enjoy this book. I enjoy a bit of young adult literature from time to time but this was just too "teen" focused. The girls were all irritating, none of the characters was particularly engaging or interesting, and although the narrator was okay, she was a bit too high-pitched for my ear.
Perhaps of interest to a pre-teen girl - 12 or thereabouts.
