Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

A good story and despite Maigret being in a place that was not in Paris there is a good atmosphere. Most enjoyable.

A confusing tale with not a lot of satisfaction for the reader. Maigret is not only rather abrupt and dictatorial with his poor wife , which I did not like, but he seems to guess the facts of the case, the relationships and motives of the characters on the basis of almost no information. he is unrealistically all-knowing, leaving us puzzled.

A brilliant novella. Maigret is entirely bed bound through out, and we are totally kept guessing until the final scene. Although we are lured into several red herrings along the way! Great stuff. Very atmospheric too, of the period, of small town France, and of the tensions and dependencies between professional men working in the same town all their lives. Secrets deeply hidden. I really enjoyed Mrs Maigret's role in this too. Relaying information, making calls to be overheard in the hotel lobby, and busying herself in her apron throughout.
Brilliant, very characterful. So much better than so many contemporary best sellers in audible crime section!
