About this listen

When you are all out of heroes, all that's left are the villains.

Black Herran was a dread demonologist, and the most ruthless general in all Essoran. She assembled the six most fearsome warriors to captain her armies: a necromancer, a vampire lord, a demigod, an orcish warleader, a pirate queen, and a twisted alchemist. Together, they brought the whole continent to its knees.... Until the day she abandoned her army, on the eve of total victory.

Forty years later, she must bring her former captains back together for one final stand, in the small town of Tarnbrooke - the last bastion against a fanatical new enemy tearing through the land, intent on finishing the job Black Herran started years before.

Seven bloodthirsty monsters. One town. Their last hope.

bloody brilliant!

I tried this on the off chance, looking for a decent standalone fantasy book. I was not disappointed.
The narrator is excellent, with a host of well differentiated voices for the seven and other characters (I particularly like his Billy Connolly style Tirnach!).
But the story, what a story. Fantasy tropes are reversed and we are in the company of villains. Not antiheroes, but cold, black hearted villains who hate each other as much or more as the fanatical Lucent Empire, worshippers of the bright one.
The story starts at a cracking pace and doesn't let go. The world building is incredible. And that ending...
If I could give this audiobook six stars I would - as good as The Lies of Locke Lamora. Buy this with a credit and you will not be disappointed!

Fun

It’s a good story and some interesting and some hilarious characters. There are some within there I’d like to read more of if Cameron Johnston is going to write more within this world but it works well as a stand-alone.

I enjoyed reading this book rather than listening as I found the narrator overacted it somewhat, which was a real shame.

Pleasing find

I’m no longer a big fan of fantasy, but I took a punt on this and was not disappointed. Some good characters and gritty writing made it most enjoyable. Some of the plot twists were unexpected but a few were predictable, as were some of the characters. Overall an enjoyable read, made more so by being a standalone story, so no waiting around for more parts.

Cheesy but good.

I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did but it's pretty good. The main characters were all strong and enjoyable despite being the tired old vamp, demon, orc type troped.

the characters

the world is basically every fantasy setting ever when you boil down to it nothing truly unique. but the world building doesny make it what it is because what it is is the characters. the dynamics the interactions the back and forth between them it feels so much like an evil dnd party and for me at least that makes for one entertaining and enjoyable book so thank you Cameron johnston for such wonderful characters in such a fun story

The bad, the even badder and the ugly

A really good premise and a really good story and hopefully there will be more tales of these despicable characters (some of whom I quite liked) but please get a different narrator, I am sure he is good at narrating but not a story like this, he was just childish not worthy of them

Worth it Yes, must read No

Could not get on with the narrator in the beginning, but he is excellent once you get accustomed to the carracters. This story is totally caracter driven, it is what makes it good. Kind of two dimensional but quite enjoyable, the mad Alchemist is as evil as it gets. The plot is bland and the bad guys are not very fun. Its the seven that make it a good listen,

A very good time with some very bad people

Great performance and an engaging, visceral story.

A little slow to start, but I found myself completely drawn in by the mid point.

A handful of huge reveals are dropped a little too casually and one of the seven adheres far too closely to stereotype (making his POV chapter a drag), but these were minor flaws in an overall extremely enjoyable audiobook.
