I find these Mamur Zapt books fascinating due to the description of the many forces at play in Egypt in the early 20th century. From colonial (English, French) to internal (Pashas, Nationalists) and religious (Copts, Muslims) - Egypt must have been a simmering pot very difficult to negotiate.
