About this listen
Shortlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2020
Longlisted for the Booker Prize 2020
The long-awaited sequel to Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, the stunning conclusion to Hilary Mantel’s Man Booker Prize-winning Thomas Cromwell trilogy.
‘If you cannot speak truth at a beheading, when can you speak it?’
England, May 1536. Anne Boleyn is dead, decapitated in the space of a heartbeat by a hired French executioner. As her remains are bundled into oblivion, Thomas Cromwell breakfasts with the victors. The blacksmith’s son from Putney emerges from the spring’s bloodbath to continue his climb to power and wealth, while his formidable master, Henry VIII, settles to short-lived happiness with his third queen. Cromwell is a man with only his wits to rely on; he has no great family to back him, no private army. Despite rebellion at home, traitors plotting abroad and the threat of invasion testing Henry’s regime to breaking point, Cromwell’s robust imagination sees a new country in the mirror of the future. But can a nation, or a person, shed the past like a skin? Do the dead continually unbury themselves? What will you do, the Spanish ambassador asks Cromwell, when the king turns on you, as sooner or later he turns on everyone close to him?
With The Mirror and the Light, Hilary Mantel brings to a triumphant close the trilogy she began with Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. She traces the final years of Thomas Cromwell, the boy from nowhere who climbs to the heights of power, offering a defining portrait of predator and prey, of a ferocious contest between present and past, between royal will and a common man’s vision: of a modern nation making itself through conflict, passion and courage.

Really? all these negative performance reviews Pff
I haven't finished yet so can't really write a comprehensive review but rather I feel compelled to respond to all the negative reviews about Ben Miles performance.
The 'voice' is different, but so too is Hilary Mantel's story telling. This Cromwell is a bit more robust, in a way that he wasn't before.
The reading seems to reflect this in my view. Cromwell was a working class man, so why is it so offensive to hear this in the telling of the story. I feel that there is a middle class bias at play here.
If you are considering this book; please give it a chance. I have been waiting for this for SOOO long and I am really enjoying so far.

Amazing end to the trilogy!
It was well worth the wait :-) Ben Miles’s narration is spot on. It’s a long listen (I don’t enjoy unabridged versions of stuff) but so worth it. I hope you are as captivated and mesmerised by Mantel’s superb characterisation of a highly complex, powerful man and his ultimate downfall.

Brilliant! So sad to finish this book.
The characters were brought to life so vividly, and the Narrator did a superb job capturing the tone and personalities. This book kept me company on lonely Covid-distancing walks. I have become obsessed with the Tudors...better than Game of Thrones!

A brilliant glimpse into Tudor England.
The telling of the final chapters of Hilary Mantel's Cromwell are brought from the page and into life through the outstanding performance of, the very talented, Ben Miles.
A trilogy once heard that deserves to be listened to and enjoyed again. The journey we are transported on, from Cromwell's brutal upbringing in Putny, to the brutality of Henry's reign is both frightening and mesmerising. A brilliant edition. Worthy of all it's plaudits.

Fascinating and emotional
This is a really great reading of what must be one of the great works of modern literature. Fascinating interpretation of a key part of British history. Ben Miles’ narration is nuanced and versatile with an authenticity and emotional depth.

Amazing Audio Trilogy
Ben Miles is an exceptional narrator. He brought the characters and story to life in a way that is so difficult to do. I would recommend this audio trilogy over the books. It is really a wonderful series.

Excellent
There are some reviews that criticise the narrator but in my opinion he has the perfect approach to delivery. Ignore the negative reviews and listen to the superb prose of Mantel told by an excellent narrator.

Best ever listen.
Fantastic writing skills. Great character depiction and really exciting story based very much on true history. Hilary Mantel has become one of my favourite authors and has never disappointed me. I have so much enjoyed all her books and Ben Miles narrates at a good pace and captures each character perfectly. I enjoyed this story tremendously and very much enjoyed Ben Miles style of narration. I recommend this audiobook.

Don't be put off by the negative reviews
I was initially disappointed by the reviews for this book as I had really been looking forward to listening. However, I am over half-way through now and am really enjoying the performance and the story. This book was purchased with 1 credit and downloaded almost immediately on release; 36 hours of entertainment and education - what more could you ask?
I have read Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies and this book continues to delight and challenge. I have awarded 5 stars for the performance, which I appreciated more and more as the book went on.
