About this listen

Hughie Erskine drops in to see his artist friend Alan Trevor who is painting what appears to be a street beggar. Feeling sympathy for the poor wretch, Erskine gives him money. What he does not realize is that the "beggar" is merely posing for the artist and is actually one of the richest men in the world, Baron Hausberg, who does not reveal his identity until Erskine has made a complete fool of himself. Renowned vocal actor David Ian Davies performs Oscar Wilde's classic short story.Public Domain (P)1990 One Voice Recordings, All Rights Reserved Anthologies Classics

Editor reviews

Oscar Wilde built a reputation in fin de siecle England as a wit, playboy, and playwright. In this story, however, Wilde demonstrates his mastery as a short story writer, as well. In this comic tale, Hughie Erskine must attempt to resolve a mess of mistaken identities. Filled with commentary on art, economics, and society, Wilde's story's humor is only amplified by a delightful performance from David Ian Davies. Davies' wry tone perfectly conveys Wilde's dry British sense of humor.
