Summary

'We need this message more than ever' – Malala Yousafzai

The right to:
Spend your own money. Go to school. Earn an income. Access contraceptives. Work outside the home. Walk outside the home. Choose whom to marry. Get a loan. Start a business. Own property. Divorce a husband. See a doctor. Drive a car.
All of these rights are denied to women in some parts of the world.

A Sunday Times bestselling debut from Melinda Gates, a timely and necessary call to action for women's empowerment.

'How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings – and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.'

In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares the stories of the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world and the lessons she’s learned from them. As she writes in the introduction, “That is why I had to write this book – to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.”

Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention – from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world – and ourselves.

When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.

This audiobook now includes a new afterword.

Critic reviews

"When you lift up women, you lift up everybody - families, communities, entire countries...In her book, Melinda tells the stories of the inspiring people she's met through her work all over the world, digs into the data, and powerfully illustrates issues that need our attention...I've called Melinda an impatient optimist and that's what she delivers here - the urgency to tackle these problems and the unwavering belief that solving them is indeed possible." (Barack Obama)

"It is a call for unity, inclusion and connection. We need this message more than ever." (Malala Yousafzai)

"The Moment of Lift is an urgent call to courage. It changed how I think about myself, my family, my work, and what's possible in the world. Melinda weaves together vulnerable, brave storytelling and compelling data to make this one of those rare books you carry in your heart and mind long after the last page." (Brené Brown, PdD, author of New York Times best seller Dare to Lead)

I loved this book. It made me cry, smile and has taught me so much about compassion and women empowerment. I loved it so much that I finished it 5 days. I think everyone in the world should read this book.

Great insights

I loved the fact that the author was narrating the book. It felt like she was telling her stories directly to me. It gave me great insights into the situations of women worldwide and how best to tackle issues.

One of the most important books I've read in years

Totally opened my eyes to a lot of things while reminding me of plenty of others. Most refreshing is the humility of Melinda's narration - she is quick to highlight how she didn't appreciate the importance of an issue or factor, so doesn't come across like some kind of ultra virtuous preacher who has always been supremely altruistic and knowledgeable. If you are human, you should listen to this book.

Reeduccating

This could not have been a better timing for my book club selection . it gave me a deeper meaning to the IWD 2020 theme the true meaning of equality, the borderline, the working woman , organisational culture. Every young lady or young man should read this and they walk around this earth only trying to make it better

Simply Inspiring

I love the use of data to drive home salient points. It’s a call to action for all readers to support the excluded people in all societies.

Empowering

A mirror to womanhood and effect of empowering woman in society.
The vivid experiences portrayed in this book brought the realities, obstacles, prejudices, misconceptions that stifle our progress. Most importantly the vision of The Gates to empower woman with their philanthropic pursuit, that is helping many families. thank you 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Nice stories but not what I expected

Quite clearly an extraordinary lady who has been a part of some truly amazing work. However. I found the comparison to aerodynamics a little repetitive and unnecessary throughout. Some of the stories were really heart breaking and others really inspiring, I guess I just wish there had been more of those insightful stories, rather than her mentions of own struggles to be equal with a billionaire husband.

Amazingly inspiring and insightful

This was a great book, amazingly written and I am so happy that this foundation has worked extensively in so many third world countries and identified ways to resolve the challenges women in many countries face. I am only keen to learn more reading this and thank you for writing so passionately on this subject! Dhipa

Empowering

The Moment of Lift delves into heartbreaking subjects such as child brides, female genital cutting, and "basic" issues that, in a just world also would have been resolved long ago, easy access to contraception. Interestingly there is also a chapter about women and agriculture you will find to be important. Though dark in the sense that the book is precise in pointing to grave problems, the emphasis is on "the lift", the breakthrough moments and aha-experiences that point to a possible, better, more equal future. By retelling her own journey Melinda includes the perspective of privileged women, revealing our blind spots and sometimes slow awakening to all the issues of gender justice.

Gates is very well worded. One reason for her clarity is the many women she has met, spoken with and sometimes shared a roof with. She cites their life-experiences and what she has learned from them. Want to meet courageous women in circumstances different from your own? Read this book. Solidarity with you all, sisters.

Recommended / important reading.
