Summary

Mr. and Mrs. Zhang live with their grown son Guisheng who works at a factory. One day an old friend of Mr. Zhang comes to visit the family after having spent years traveling in the mysterious hills of China’s Yunnan Province. He tells the Zhang family of a monkey’s paw that has magical powers to grant three wishes to the holder. Against his better judgement, he reluctantly gives the monkey paw to the Zhang family, along with a warning that the wishes come with a great price for trying to change ones fate.....

The joys of late-onset extended reading

One’s late seventies are not ideally conducive to getting serious about Chinese especially when it comes to the already significant challenges of recognizing and retaining hanzi. Some simplified readers I had looked at seemed childish or adolescent in substance or were based on Chinese generic expectations. What I wanted was texts that would wrap their meagre budget of words round stories that were interesting and engaging. The Mandarin Companion series, aimed at adult Western learners, hammers away at character repetition but sustains the exhilarating misery that entails by resorting to instantly accessible adventure narratives and proven page-turning features, plundered from tried classics but adapted to Chinese settings. After trying the Sherlock Holmes adaptation, I worked my way through the remaining 7 level-one titles, as well as their level-two texts (alas only 3 published to date). Just as I was gearing up to start going through the whole lot again, I stumbled across Zhang Xiuye’s beautiful, clear and gentle readings of all 8 level-one books on Audible. I am now delighted to be working through them again, adding listening, with or without the text. And I am actually even getting better!
