About this listen

Talia is on a mission. One that will end with her breaking both rules of her Coven—don’t use magic for evil and don’t cross the boundary.

For years, the witches and demons were at war. The only solution was a boundary put between them that neither of them were to cross at the risk of breaking their treaty. To find the truth of her beloved Ian’s death, Talia must follow the clues he’s left behind, the ones that warn he wasn’t the witch she knew. He had a dangerous secret, one that not only caused him to cross the boundary but also left him at the mercy of the demons.

On the other side, Talia realizes the demons are nothing like she’s been told. Wrapped up in the growing mystery of Ian’s death, Talia is joined by a hunky but concerned demon named Marcus. As he guides her through Ian’s secret world, Talia begins to suspect that the demons weren’t responsible for Ian’s fate after all. With the help of Marcus and her familiar, Mushroom, Talia is plunged into the depths of danger and black magic where she makes a startling discovery—the people she loved the most were the dangerous ones all along.

I enjoyed this book, I liked Thalia and her determination to get answers but also her openess to hearing and accepting uncomfortable truths.

My favourite character is mushroom the familiar, she's adorable and quirky and fistey in her own fierce little way. I could easily listen to a whole series of mushrooms adventures.

I think the narrator did a fantastic job bringing each character to life with their own tones and personalities.

Quality novella with a satisfying outcome Accepting the truth about a situation that is outside the limits of your understanding. worldview or imagination is very challenging. Linking this in with loss and fresh grieving for a lover would be a daunting challenge for any young woman. Talia is brave and likeable from the outset. None of the tiresome spoiled brat syndrome here. In addition her personal growth throughout the story is admirable and the end of the Novella I found myself cheering for her as she embark on a brand new adventure. It was easy to care for these characters despite the short length of the book.

Marcus is a fun and attractive character but my favourite side character has to be Mushroom - totally hilarious and kick butt. Loyalty, friendship, the true nature of good and evil, and letting go of our preconceived ideas about others who are different from us are all worthy and well-explored themes in this Novella. This is quite an achievment in two hours and 47 minutes. Please note this is an adult book with a detailed and well-written romantic scene so I do not recommend it for under 17s.

As a Novella, it is not reasonable to expect a lot of background but I found myself longing for more insight into this world and its quirky residents. Kayla Krantz has however written a well crafted and enjoyable story that exceeded all my expectations in terms of pace, plot and characters. The narration by Meg Clawson was inequivocably excellent and gripping from the first sentence of the book and I will gladly seek out further books she partners on.

This book was a pleasure that I listened to in one sitting and couldn't put down.
