About this listen

Sui Annukka is the Winner of the Women’s Prize for Fiction Discoveries Award 2022. The Mother Sun is an exclusive novella for Audible.

Sent on a marketing conference from Sri Lanka to London by her boss, Surya is supposed to be enjoying a change of scene after a tragedy that has left her grief stricken and lost – and compulsively fixated on a long-buried, shameful episode from her past.

Finding herself in the same city as the boy she birthed for an English couple seventeen years ago – in exchange for the money that paid her college tuition – Surya is prepared to risk everything for a glimpse of him.

Surya promises herself that she will be satisfied with just seeing her boy and knowing that he is safe and well. But when she tracks him down and follows him to work at a local café, she is left with more questions than answers. Why has he dropped out of school? Why is he at odds with the world? As they get chatting and he offers to give her a tour of London, she can’t resist the chance to get to know him better.

Forced to confront her past, Surya starts to navigate a way beyond her feelings of guilt, shame, and grief, towards a hopeful future – but what will happen when the boy finds out who she is? Could finding all she ever wanted mean losing everything for a second time?

Gives good insight into caste type system in Sri Lanka and the difficulties for those trying break through, both women and men. Also highlights how we all have prejudices including those who are not as privileged. really enjoyed and did not think it bleak but hopeful. Highly recommend.

Lovely story and well narrated

I only chose this book as it was included with my audible subscription...and am I glad I did! From the amazing narrator to the wonderful story, that felt hard to listen to at moments but just had to keep listening to, I cannot recommend listening to this book highly enough. Just a wonderful coming together of story and voice.

I came across this book, which is in a genre completely outside my wheelhouse, whilst browsing the 'freebies and decided to give it a go.
I was absolutely blown away by it ! It's such a beautiful story, wonderfully narrated and full of depths of emotion .
I laughed and cried (ugly sobbed, actually!) and devoured it as one would a special treat.
I'm going to listen to it again as I'm sure that I will have missed so much nuance the first time.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough - please read it, you deserve a treat !

A beautiful, beautiful story

I had no idea what to expect but was transported to a story of a life that felt so real because of the writing and the performance. This story has so many layers to it and airs so many issues in the most natural way. It felt like a life lived rather than a story written.

Really enjoyed
