This is easily the best book I've read this year...and best thing from the UK in many years. The Movement is a clever, profound, intricate, nuanced take on the burden of representation post covid post Brexit and in the context of consumer capitalism. It takes race, class and gender politics seriously, but also the all too human desires for love, acceptance, peace, and in 21st century Britain, personal and professional fulfilment. Whereas the interweaving of so many themes would be too much for most writers, Ayisha Malik's characters are all fully-fleshed, and her plot, themes, pace are all all beautifully, masterfully crafted. This is a very special book. The way my brain was on fire from the earliest pages all the way through brought me rare joy. This book reminded me of why I fell in love with reading. 'Instant classic' is cliché, but true of The Movement by Ayisha Malik. Absolutely must-read. The narrator to be commended for bringing such a variety of characters from different classes and geographical locations to life. Overall: a fantastic audiobook.
