About this listen
The New York Times bestseller
They say a tiger that devours too many humans can take the form of a man and walk among us...
In 1930s colonial Malaya, a dissolute British doctor receives a surprise gift of an eleven-year-old Chinese houseboy. Sent as a bequest from an old friend, young Ren has a mission: to find his dead master's severed finger and reunite it with his body. Ren has forty-nine days, or else his master's soul will roam the earth forever.
Ji Lin, an apprentice dressmaker, moonlights as a dancehall girl to pay her mother's debts. One night, Ji Lin's dance partner leaves her with a gruesome souvenir that leads her on a crooked, dark trail.
As time runs out for Ren's mission, a series of unexplained deaths occur amid rumours of tigers who turn into men. In their journey to keep a promise and discover the truth, Ren and Ji Lin's paths will cross in ways they will never forget.
Captivating and lushly written, The Night Tiger explores the rich world of servants and masters, ancient superstition and modern ambition, sibling rivalry and unexpected love. Woven through with Chinese folklore and a tantalizing mystery, this novel is a story of the highest order.

Should be a star rating for the edit.
A safe average book. Finished it more because I don't like having unfinished books in my library. I think the book would have been more enjoyable as an actual read and not an Audible 'read'.
Wasn't a fan of the edit. Felt rushed. No soon as one chapter had finished then it was onto the next without a slight pause.

Don't be put off by the narration
Initially I struggled with the strange stop/start, halting style of the narrator and didn't think I'd be able to keep listening. I'm so glad I persevered as I really enjoyed the story. The characters are very endearing.

Is it wrong to fancy your step brother?
Really immersive book with great insight into Chinese beliefs and traditions. Couldn't stop listening even in spite of questionable sexy bits.

4.25/5
Told from several points of view, The Night Tiger is a mysterious tale that draws you in. A dressmaker's apprentice, an orphaned house boy and a British doctor are drawn into the same mystery from different angles, surrounded by weretigers, amputated fingers and Chinese & Malay folklore and superstition.
- The different point of view were very distinct. some are told in first person, others in third and they all had their own separate voice and personality. I enjoyed Ren's parts (the house boy) the most but all were well done. informative but leaving enough unseen and unsaid to keep the intrigue.
- The whole book was very atmospheric and the feel of the different places and environments came across well. There were some dream sections where this was particularly notable.
- The author's narration was excellent and brought the story to life. As above, it was easy to tell which character's point of view was the present one due to the tone.
A strange but fascinating mystery story. Perfect for those who enjoy magical realism, Asian folklore and a good winding mystery.

A wonderful story
I loved this book, the narration was perfect, and the story captivating, Ren and Ji Lin will stay with me for a long time. It is a glimpse into a different time, telling of superstitions, cultural beliefs and daily life in a very beautiful way.

Fantastic!
Such a wonderful book, strong and likeable characters, interesting story about people, life and culture and some mystery and magic too. The author narrates and has a great voice which I loved listening to. I’m looking out for her next book now. I feel sad it has ended
