If you had the perfect life . . . how far would you go to protect it?
Professor Olivia Sweetman has worked hard to achieve the life of her dreams, with a high-flying career as a TV presenter and historian, three children, and a talented husband.

Only one other person knows that Olivia's perfect life is in fact a desperate tangle of lies: Vivian Tester, the socially awkward, middle-aged housekeeper of a Sussex manor who found the Victorian diary of a pioneering female surgeon on which Olivia's new biography is based.

In a gripping narrative that shifts between London, Sussex, and the idyllic South of France, Olivia and Vivian will learn knife-edged truths about themselves and discover just how far each will go to protect her reputation.©2017 Lucy Atkins (P)2017 WF Howes Ltd.

I really enjoyed this book it was so well read . I was gripped when the plot really thickened and found myself finding time to listen to more .

A fantastic listen

Interesting historical and scientific themes, especially in the context of discrimination against women. Plot was initially intriguing but it dragged on and became so involved as to stretch credulity. It also needed editing. Almost very good but fell short of early promise in a disappointing way. I thought the narration was ok. I didn't find it as grating as other reviewers.

Interesting themes but never really came together

I enjoyed this novel very much. Well written, well plotted, I felt the characters were very three dimensional. My only complaint was the narrator playing Olivia - a very irritating semi-gabbling way of talking. I found it very distracting, had the novel not been so good I would probably have given up.

Excellent

Enjoyed the story, but felt the ending was very abruot. Even re listened a couple of times as thought I had somehow missed a chapter!

This story is unusual and well written, the character's well drawn. I found the main protagonist, Olivia, self obsessed, shallow and generally unlikeable. I warmed to Vivian more. Unfortunately, the experience of listening was ruined by the narration, specifically, that of Julia Franklin. In the early chapters, she moved towards and away from the microphone quite a lot and this resulted in my being unable to set the volume at a good level. Worse, when she voiced any character sounding angry, or upset, and whenever she voiced a child, she became very high pitched. This had me leaping for the volume control and feeling like pulling out my own teeth. There really is no need for it to be read this way. Sadly, a narrator can make or break the experience of listening to an audiobook.

Ruined for me by Julia Franklin's narration!

This novel has all my favourite ingredients: mystery, darkness, a literary feel and more than a few twists and turns. It should have been a five star read but for some reason it never really quite got there. I blame much of this on the dreadful, screeching narration by the actress who read Olivia but there was also an overarching feel that we'd been here before - with Notes on Scandal, which is a far superior piece of writing. That said, it was still an enjoyable (if predictable) read.

Good story marred by poor narration and audio

This was an interesting and convoluted story. I moved between Kindle and Audible. I enjoyed the story which was well written but it was too long. Whole chapters could have been edited out. Interminable pages on Bertie nearly made me give up.
The two main characters were both unappealing. Neither was admirable. However the developing narrative depended on this. Olivia was self obsessed. Vivian was mentally disturbed by her own obsessions.
The loose ends and the strange ending I thought were positive.

good story but needed editing

Hard to engage with the story when it sounds like the narrator is struggling to actually read. Wrongly emphasised in places, terribly paced and with sound production like it had been recorded in a swimming pool. After loving Magpie Lane I gave up on this.

Destroyed by awful narration

I really struggled to finish this book as it dragged on quite a bit near the end. I am baffled as to what relevance the title has to the story. The "night visitor" never really features in it. Far too much information about beetles and other creepy crawlies. Reads a bit like a nature book at times. Overall I would not recommend either the author or narrator.

Neither great nor terrible

I don’t really understand the point of the book. It felt repetitive and both main characters were really unlikeable. I didn’t care what happened to them. Plus the ending ? I don’t understand it. Will be asking for my credit back
