Summary

The celebrated modern classic from the number one best-selling writer.

THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD 'BOOK OF THE YEAR'

AN ACCLAIMED WEST END THEATRE PRODUCTION

This is what he remembers, as he sits by the ocean at the end of the lane:

A dead man on the back seat of the car and warm milk at the farmhouse.

An ancient little girl and an old woman who saw the moon being made.

A beautiful housekeeper with a monstrous smile.

And dark forces woken that were best left undisturbed.

They are memories hard to believe, waiting at the edges of things. The recollections of a man who thought he was lost but is now, perhaps, remembering a time when he was saved....

NEIL GAIMAN.

"Some books just swallow you up, heart and soul." (Joanne Harris)

"Summons both the powerlessness and wonder of childhood, and the complicated landscape of memory and forgetting." (Guardian)

Childhood through adult eyes

As a fan of Neil Gaiman's previous work, I approached this new novel with great interest as it promised to include more realism than usual. It's a short book, but it suits its length well – Gaiman has turned out a little gem.

The blending of fantasy and the real works well, but Gaiman is on firmer ground with his treatment of the fantastical as he lets his considerable imagination fly. The more realistic narrative by contrast seems to come from a less experienced author, but it is still solid and well written, so my impression is just that Gaiman is still not completely comfortable with writing about real things.

Gaiman's narration is excellent as always and I would highly recommend that readers give any of his audiobooks a try.

Beautiful

Slips between realities without leaving a trace. A beautiful, extraordinary book - just make sure you find the right time to listen to it.

Intriguing story

This story is quite unique, part children's novel, part something darker, yet it works as both and is enjoyable to listen to. The story is not over the top, nor is it too simple, a perfect blending both, with an excellent POV to make it all the more unique.

Beautifully written and read

Another triumph by Gaiman. Different from some of his more ‘graphic’ novels but still filled with life, death, desire and intrigue.
You’ll enjoy every minute of this book, the depth of detail and description adds to the visual depictions in your mind putting you clearly in the scene as an onlooker to the situation from within the mind of the narrator.
If you’ve never read or heard a book by NEIL then this is a great place to start.
Only a writer can truly narrate the exact way the book should be read and Neil’s voice has a great tone and rhythm that will keep you listening.
Highly recommendable.

A master

He uses words like, you know, the best version of anyone. I’ll wait a month, then listen again, despite owning hundreds of audiobooks. Bravo.

Magical!

Neil Gaiman can do no wrong. This is an incredible tale about that awkward time in one's life when the protective cloak of childhood begins to melt away and suddenly one is exposed to the harsh realities of life. Gaiman wraps his theme in a supernatural plot filled with fearsome creatures and three eccentric ladies that are far more than meets the eye.

p.s Gaiman's voice performance is wonderful, listen out for a bit of singing near the end.

A corker

Beautiful, moving, scary. A great example of how the scariest monsters are the ones we imagine in childhood.

Nothing's better than Neil narrating his own work

If you could sum up The Ocean at the End of the Lane in three words, what would they be?

Scary, beautiful, enthralling

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Ocean at the End of the Lane?

When the narrator finds himself back at the farm after all these years, not remembering he has been there before.

What about Neil Gaiman’s performance did you like?

Everything. The way the words tumble out of him so deliberate in thier tone and pacing but so gently spoken. I wish I could just listen to him narrate everything

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Neither, but it did make my heart race. I was honestly scared by some parts

truly beautiful little tale.

A perfect example of Gaiman's ability to beautifully capture the imagination of childhood. This tale is told through adult eyes more painfully aware of action's consequences and Gaiman's narration carries the emotions through excellently.
