American James Bond

Kind of like the American James Bond, chase is plucked from near baseball stardom. Recruited into a shadowy domain of American assassins, though whether the motivation is money or national pride for some is in doubt. Got chase it is about the latter and the patriotic recruit is given his first assignment where he meets a lovely Russian. The story goes on from there. Some good tension, great story a couple of places where I rolled my eyes (a bit too US all loving) but if you overlook those a great listen. Will follow up with more of the series.

An interesting start.

Chase is so naive, and arrogant as just a young man can be. For someone trained as an assassin he takes a lot at face value.

Secrets and lies as a covert agent

When you are a covert operative for the government living your life on the edge and trusting no one is all in a normal day for Chase Fulton but when he spies another assassin tampering with a horse race his world and life as he knows it is turned upside down. This book is exciting and the narrator of this audio really suits the pace and feel of the story. This is an exciting start to this series of books and I can’t wait for book two.

That Yankee Doodle Dandy s**t we take for granted.

After winning the College World Series for his team, but, in the process, losing the future baseball career for himself, Chase Fulton concentrates hard on his psychology studies, growing close to his professor, Dr.Richtor. Instead of attending his graduation, however, the professor surprises Chase by flying him to an island to meet several of Richter's old pals and offer him the chance to join the ranks of secret assassins, risking everything to serve his country - and make a !of of money. Of course, he says yes.

Written in the first person from Chase's perspective, the introductory chapter on how he acquires his future-destroying injury during the final minutes of a baseball game is riveting and superb, even for a Brit like myself who has no knowledge of, nor interest in, the game. It drew me in completely. This book moves swiftly from one action packed scenario to another, only quickly drawing breath for 'the grand romance', a love at first sight, from a distance, type of affair. And, thereafter, multitudinous coincidences make this story completely unlikely: a real case of suspending disbelief required, especially since this all American, intellectually clever college graduate seems to be such a self destructive simpleton geek. And yet the book was strangely compelling. Narration by Kyle Tait was excellent, read with understanding and expression, and giving individual voice to all of the characters as well as becoming a very believable Chase Fulton. A good performance.

The start of the career of a new James Bond? Perhaps, if he survives for long enough. But at this point in his career, Chase Fulton is far too easily fooled, nowhere near suave enough and his whole private life is riddled with coincidences and unlikely decisions. He has the money, though - eight million dollars for his first job: not a bad return. My thanks to the rights holder of The Opening Chase, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. Despite my constant inner protests, I very much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next: The Broken Chase. Recommended to all who enjoy fast moving thrillers of the lone assassin kind.

Killing Cerberus, and only one bounty

l digested 10hrs in 19hrs, falling asleep several times. As an opening to a series it wasn't to painful, we all know the first book is tough going. but it was interesting and insightful done.
depth of character's was good, plot interesting and frustrating as it was ment to be. Though not ground breaking in plot or design, it's done a good job grounding the group in a world were trust is a luxury.
my only complaint is Chase really didn't show any skills in reading people, let alone imagination. Almost every action film in the 80's was on cold war, agents/spies, or Russian bad guys. content was all about manipulation, reading people, etc. Chase could not spot a twist or plot point with arrows pointing at it. Add a female and lack of blood seems to be an issue.
reason and situation awareness a running shower. Fellow agent dead, caught by security, returning back to his boat. wow This kid could play the Grinch without body paint.
plus drinking like a fish while you know your being hunted... only in the movies.
you can't boast about natural skills, then turn him into "That Guy".
Yes he has a lot to learn, but you don't remove from his natural skill you built up. the ranch training seemed to reduce his skills not add to them.
