About this listen
London, 1910. Lily is 10 years old when she realises her grandmother, a washerwoman, is seriously ill. She's determined to do what she can to help and keep her grandmother's illness a secret - even from her beloved twin, Artie.
When tragedy strikes and the twins are faced with the prospect of a workhouse or an orphanage, a benefactor offers to take Artie in and educate him. All Artie's needs will be taken care of - but the gentleman has no use for a girl. As the orphan twins grow up and take different paths, their new lives are beyond anything they could have imagined. Will they ever find a way to be together again?

Easy listening
I don't like the narrator, all the wo.en voices sound like old ladies even when they are only 9 year old and I get a mental picture of any men she is doing regardless of what age they are supposed to be in my head they are oap's 5' 6" grey haired, pipe, unshaven, flat cap, round glasses and every one of them sound the same, which puts me off the story a bit, this story was ok poor little kids that make good after working hard.

what a story
This is the first Lesley Eames book I've had the absolute pleasure to listen to, I'm quite shocked at just how much I enjoyed it and really didn't want it to end. Loved all the characters, would love a sequel?!
And as always, a brilliant narration by the lovely Annie Aldington.

Good Book!
Very good book but hardly any twists. Anna Jacabs can be a great author for' feel good, happy endings" books but although Annie Addington can be good at reading books, most of the characters sound the same, and the youngest character always sounds extremely happy and very clever.
It can be annoying because you know how every book is going to sound when she narrates.
I am sorry Annie Addington it's not personal.

A heartwarming and compelling tale
This is a truly compelling novel brought to life by the narration of ever-brilliant Ann Aldringham.
The story takes the listener on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as the lives of two devoted 10 year-old twins are changed forever by tragedy.
What I really like about this book is the fact that there is no extreme child cruelty central to the story, which makes a refreshing change from similar books set in the early 1900s.
Having said that, it is impossible to remain unmoved by the terrible choices the children are forced to make in dire circumstances.
There are some harrowing themes to this book, but triumph over adversity remains the heartwarming undercurrent.
The book inspires tremendous hope, especially as friendships and deeper relationships strengthen and unite the characters.
I found this book impossible to put down, and I would highly recommend it.
