Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and the micro-aggressions, she's thrilled when Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They've only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events cause Nella to become Public Enemy Number One and Hazel, the Office Darling.
Then the notes begin to appear on Nella's desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW.
It's hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realises that there is a lot more at stake than her career.
Dark, funny and furiously entertaining, The Other Black Girl will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last twist.

I Felt the main character could have a bit more grit….that’s not life though, is it? It’s not how it really works. It gets to the best of us. Where we start complying before we even realise it because let’s face it. It is easier!
I liked it.

The story builds momentum and suspense and the ending is appropriately inconclusive.
Wherever and whenever we eschew the dominant paradigm we must resolve how far we are prepared to compromise with the mainstream. The apparently simple thesis in this fable is that there are no easy solutions. We are encouraged to empathize with Nella while appreciating that any participation in society involves facing multiple temptations that if we succumb to them will undermine and betray our core beliefs.
Although this story is centred on ethnicity, the conundrum it highlights applies more widely, with religion and environmental issues coming particularly to mind
The price of authenticity
