About this listen

This chance for us Howards comes once in a century…

1521. Henry VIII rules over a fashionable court alive with pageant and celebration, the lack of a son his only threat. When young Mary Boleyn arrives at court, she becomes his new mistress, an unwitting pawn in the ambitions of the powerful Boleyn and Howard families.

As Henry’s interest begins to wane, the Boleyns scheme to put forward Mary’s sister, Anne. Yet Anne Boleyn, newly returned from the French court, won’t agree to be Henry’s mistress – only his wife.

Pitting the king’s desperation for an heir against the advice of his powerful advisors, Wolsey and Cromwell, what follows will change the course of a country’s history.

Fantastic

I couldn't forget, to begin with, that this was fiction in a very authentic factual setting, but as the storyline developed I was entirely caught up with it, gaining insights into the political machinations of that period, and whetting my appetite to read more about the period with Wolf Hall.

I liked it all and although evident a lot of legend and imagination was involved it is still a good listen.

That Anne was a shrewd and Henry was so selfish but covered it up in the name of the people.

Honestly, you won’t be able to stop listening, hoovering, cooking, walking the dog it’s an addictive story, and Philippa Gregory a clever clever woman.
Oh and Vanessa Kirby an inspired reader, just a hop and a leap back in time from Princess Margaret.

Captivating

This is an enthralling story spoilt by a monotonous and tedious narration. It needs a storyteller with a bit more variety in her voice and more enthusiasm.

Dull narration.

The creative telling of Mary' s story throws further light on the position of women and the overweening arrogance of men in that period of history - a state some seem to want to go back to. Next best to slaves, used as pawns to buy wealth, influence and power, birds in gilded cages, disregarded by most except what they could be used for to the 'betterment' of family. A choice regarding education and marriage being non existent for the women of these families, their wits were all they had to rely on. The life of the court is brilliantly described, with all its excesses and rituals along with its rivalries and positioning for notice and power. For all its glittering, it rings hollow and empty. A difficult place to have any sort of satisfactory inner life. The descriptions are very detailed. The behaviours intricately described and the shifting relationships examined minutely. An exquisite sense of place and an amazing sense of each person involved. This book does not sugar coat the realities of the age but does not allow the physical and social mores to overwhelm the characterisation centralto the narrative. Beautifully read. One review of this book speaks of a monotone and flat narration - well, that's not the book I have just listened to, the narrator doing a stunning job of giving each character a clear and definite voice, a real pleasure to listen to. Thoroughly enjoyed this book in all it's aspects.

Illuminating telling of the disappeared Boleyn.

I put off listening to this for a while as it is a long story but it is a superbly engaging account of how Henry the 8th moved from one wife to the next told through the eyes of Mary Boleyn. All the more fascinating that our Queen Elizabeth is a descendant of Mary Boleyn (Anne Boleyn’s sister) and Henry the 8th but Mary is rarely spoken of. Captivating story and expertly narrated.

Really engaging story of the Boleyn’s
