About this listen

I killed the men who butchered my parents and dodged the hangman’s noose—now I’m an outlaw bound by honor, drawn to the one man who wants nothing to do with me.

After years of drifting and hiding my secrets, I sense a chance of redemption at Isaiah Ranch. I’ve known family and honor—can I find it again here?

Ambrose Isaiah, the youngest heir of a powerful ranching dynasty, sees me as a threat—a killer with no place among his kin. He’s right, but that doesn’t stop the spark between us.

I didn’t come here to stay. I didn’t come here to fall in love. I’m everything Ambrose should despise. But away from prying eyes, with only the wilderness as witness, we cross a line neither of us can take back.

Our secret heats up fast—but so does the danger. A violent gang is closing in with the ranch in their sights. When betrayal hits close to home, we have to fight… even if it means losing everything.

The land, the truth…and each other.

I enjoyed the historical setting of this slow burn romance. Ambrose, the heir, has not had an easy life. Samuel, a convict serving time (the outlaw), is sent to work on Ambrose's family ranch. They're able to work together (after a rough start ) to keep the ranch safe from a gang. Given the period of time, it made sense that it's a slow burn story. Apparently this is a prequel to the same-named series, though I did feel like I missed anything by not reading any of the other books.
Good story, though a little long.

The narration was great - Michael Dean was a good fit for the characters, especially with Samuel's personality and sharpish tongue.

Reread as audiobook. I love this narrator for other ranch based stories, and he was just as good as ever.
Story - 4.25 stars. An excellent origin story, starting the Isaiah Ranch tradition of helping criminals in the 1800s. Giving the women Elizabeth and Hipolita so much say at a time when they couldn't have any in public was a real highlight. I figured out the plot twist early on, but that didn't detract from the plot. Ambrose and Samuel eventually made a great team, and their constant bickering remained enjoyable.

The Outlaw and the Heir is the prequel to the Isaiah Ranch series and is set against the backdrop of the American West.
The author's writing style is captivating and it didn't take long for me to find myself in the middle of the story. The story is told alternately from Ambrose's and Samuel's point of view.
Samuel is a convict who comes to work on the ranch run by the powerful Isaiah ranching family. There he meets the family's son, Ambrose, who initially views him with suspicion, but who comes to trust him over time. And then there's this attraction between the two of them that won't let go.
The romance is definitely slow burn and it worked perfectly. I loved how Samuel and Ambrose slowly got closer to each other. Overall, I thought the setting was great, there's a lot of emotion and there's quite a bit of tension. Even if the romance starts slowly, I found the story very entertaining.
The two of them fought for the ranch together, but also for their lives. There were also great secondary characters like Ambrose's sister and some secrets are revealed at the end.

Michael Dean is a brilliant narrator who brought the story to life. It was a real pleasure to listen to his narration. He gave Ambrose and Samuel the appropriate voices and you could really feel the emotions. I listened to the audiobook in just two days, as I said, great entertainment!

.Ambrose and Samuel had mutual animosity between them in the beginning.
They were like oil and water, neither one truly trusting the other.
Eventually, as they work alongside each other, they find common ground in their love for the ranch.
They share laughter and they have some amazing chemistry.
They do find themselves in some danger as they experience a threat to the ranch but thankfully they're able to resolve it.
The epiloge was absolutely beautiful.
Michael Dean did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.
