About this listen

Set in a broken future England, where gunfights and monsters collide, this is the exciting first title in a phenomenal fantasy teen series by best-selling children's novelist Jonathan Stroud

England has been radically changed by a series of catastrophes - large cities have disappeared, and London has been replaced by a lagoon. The surviving population exists in fortified towns where they cling to traditional ways, while strangely evolved beasts prowl the wilderness beyond. Conformity is rigidly enforced, and those who fall foul of the rules are persecuted: some are killed; others are driven out into the wilds. Only a few fight back - and two of these outlaws, Scarlett McCain and Albert Browne, display an audacity and talent that makes them legends.

Critic reviews

“A classic in the making.” (Eoin Colfer)

“Perfectly paced, beautifully written and bursting with black humour and bold ideas.” (Philip Reeve)

“Stroud’s writing is a treat; brilliantly crafted world building, taut action scenes, fabulous villains and witty dialogue. A wild ride indeed, and the first in a series.” (The Observer)

Loved this. The story unfolds with pace and an unravelling mystery. Great characters and a brilliant unique dystopian world

Brilliant dystopian YA

My daughter struggled with the pitch/tone of the narration but the story is brilliant otherwise

The story is superb and very engaging although occasionally a little detailed and you want to move along but it does spoil it and I was full bought in all the way through.
I’m straight into the next book to find out what the two outlaws and their friends get up to next.
This is Jonathan Stroud at his best and comparable to his other series

Great characters who you get involved with

Enjoyable for what it is. Had me excited for sequel. Bartimaeus is still better.

Closer to Lockwood than Bartimaeus

In the first chapter, I struggled to set the images to mind, but that soon changed, and I was lost in the story. excellent story and so is the second.

it took me a little while to get into this, I watched the lockwood series on netflix then when it got canceled bought all the books here breezed through those but wanted more. I think after the first 6 hours it starts getting better and the final few hours I couldn't stop, went straight to the next book. hope there will be a third.

Took me a little while

found some parts a little far fetched but this is basically just a really good story - good characters, great setting and excellent pacing. It was able to jump from eerie to almost slapstick while keeping a coherent and engaging story throughout. Some might say its a bit of a YA book but I dont think that should stop anyone from buying it - a good story is a good story.

a great story
