About this listen

From listening to his grandmother recite epic poems from memory to curling up in bed while his father read funny verses, award-winning actor John Lithgow grew up with poetry. Ever since, John has been an enthusiastic seeker of poetic experience, whether reading, reciting, or listening to great poems.

The wide variety of carefully selected poems in this book provides the perfect introduction to appeal to listeners new to poetry, and for poetry lovers to experience beloved verses in a fresh, vivid way. William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, and Dylan Thomas are just a few names among Lithgow's comprehensive list of poetry masters. His essential criterion is that "each poem's light shines more brightly when read aloud."

This unique package provides a multimedia poetry experience with a bonus MP3 CD of revelatory poetry readings by John and the familiar voices of such notable performers as Eileen Atkins, Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Billy Connolly, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Lynn Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Gary Sinise, and Sam Waterston. Every listener will enjoy reciting or listening to these poems with the entire family, appreciating how each one comes to life through the spoken word in this superlative poetry collection.

Delightful

ever felt something one time about a poem? curious? then this is a good place to start. I particularly enjoyed the reading of Elizabeth Bishop's filling station.

fully educational

This is for me a full introduction into British poetry and not only as I am from Romania.I loved some I hated some but kept the knowledge. I like the voice and personality of the author that adds to creating athmosphere.I am fully delighted in this purchase.

Lovely collection

This is great, with some fantastic narrators. It used to be my essential bedtime listening until I saw John Lithgow in Dexter as a creepy sometimes naked serial killer and now it’s not really appropriate!

Perfect poetry collection

I really enjoyed this collection: both Lithgow's commentary which was insightful and funny, and hearing the different, sometimes familiar voices reciting the poems. There is a lot of a variety here and so for most listeners, there will be old and new favourites. This is a lovely collection to have and to give - you can't really go wrong.

a great selection but could do with more poetry

this is a fantastic selection, with many great poets and poems, and some great performances by major actors. However there is a little too much explanation in comparison to only a few stanzas of poetry per poet. The balance is a little off because of this I feel. However on the whole I loved the book, and have found new love for new poets because of this audiobook which I'm grateful for

What A Lovely Listen!

I couldn't have loved this more. The short and unintrusive introductions to the poet themselves before their work is read by a different vouce and then analysed by the narrator. I bought this because I love John Lithgow but I loved it because he added to the poetry a conversational edge and further reading section that made it a truly special experience.

Blah, blah, blah

Just wanted to listen to some good poetry, not this waffling bollocks :-) What a waste of a credit.
