A story of small-town intrigue that begins with a large sum of money being entrusted and then mysteriously disappearing. The novel was extremely popular and one of Bennett's greatest successes.

I love Arnold Bennet's 'Five Towns' novels but had to give up on this one after a few chapters. The narrator was terrible: she sounded like a sixth former stumbling through the text for the first time. Simple words were mispronounced and often she didn't seem to understand what she was reading. I'm sure if Peter Joyce had been reading it, it would have been well worth hearing. What a shame!
