Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Take a step through the looking glass to a strange land, one where Piers Morgan is a voice worth listening to about race, where white people buy self-help books to help them cope with their whiteness, where Boris Johnson and Donald Trump are seen by the majority of the population as 'the right (white) man for the job'. Perhaps you know it. All the inhabitants seem to be afflicted by a serious delusions, like that racism doesn't exist and if it does it can be cured with a one-hour inclusion seminar, and bizarre collective hallucinations, like the widely held idea that Britain's only role in slavery was to abolish it.

But there is a serious side too. Black and brown people suffer from a greater number of mental health difficulties, caused in no small part by living in a racist society. But being Black and brown has itself been pathologised by the young field of psychology. Society cannot face up to the racism at its heart and in its history, so the delusions, irrationalities and hallucinations it conjures up to avoid doing so can only best be described as a psychosis, and the costs are being borne by the sons and daughters of that racist history.

Kehinde Andrews is your piercing, wry and not a little funny guide back to sanity, unpicking the absurd and outrageous lies society tells to keep up the status quo and The Psychosis of Whiteness is your lifeboat out of this topsy turvey world.

Great insight into racism and whiteness

You did it again Prof. This was a really good book to listen to. I learnt new things, and I was challenged a few times. The psychosis is real. Definitely will be revisiting this book.

7 hours and 15 minutes of excellence

I was so happy to see this book was on Audible. In my later years I’ve found I have limited time to read, but I do have ample time to listen. Everyday chores and work are usually accompanied by the sounds of LBC in my home, so this was an easy transition. This book was exactly what I needed to hear. Being Black and hearing/ watching my story being used as a marketing tool to prove non racism was becoming sickening but I was beginning to think I was the only person who had a problem with the idea of “allies” etc. White allies is a term I’m very uncomfortable reading/ hearing especially when Black people say it. I agree that “anti racism” training is a nonsense and I’m bewildered by the many who are currently profiting from it.
The Kick it Out campaign, as an example, in football started in 1993, millions and millions of pounds have been spent on this movement, but a banana skin will still be thrown at a Black football player, playing in the highest tier of the sport. That’s because the psychosis of whiteness is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. This book clearly identifies it as so.

The bit about the plantation homes now being used as a wedding venue literally hit me hard.

Would anyone ever consider turning the gas chambers used in the holocaust into an air bnb experience?

What I like most is that this book doesn’t bore you to death with history lessons. The writer uses common knowledge narratives to highlight the sickness, who hasn’t heard of Nelson Mandela?

A must read for any Black person perplexed by todays world and wondering why civil rights hasn’t worked in our favour.

White folks can read this too, I’m not sure what you’ll get from it. Honestly, what you think is not my concern.

Thank you Dr Kehinde Andrews for writing this. It’s important that us Blacks in Britain show the world “we ain’t all stupid”. I think Black American literature and culture dominates the common thinking within Blacks and this needs to shift.

White Psychosis: how infectious is it?

This book is written by a dedicated university professor in black studies so he should know what he is talking about.

And is a book for those who have read books about black history and racism. Or are of European origin and enjoy music high art, travel and going to museums, going to the movies, listening to recitals, and living in the country side in a majority white neighborhood this book is also for you.

Its a how to break out of the reading therefore I am what I have read haze? Its intention as mentioned in the final chapter is to act upon the issue. The issue? Ending racism.

This book gives global and local examples of how racism has been operating in the hearts and minds of society and getting away with it for centuries, in your mind in your heart.

Its explores how black people become the boogie man through the preposterous ideas of learned white men who put forward a range of dehumanizing documents to deny the suffering of black people through racism oppression.

It evidences the horrors of modern systemic statistical racism the next iteration of racism from the overt murdering of the ancestors of the enslaved in places like southern America. It covers the way history is distorted to reframe unworthy characters as leaders of the abolish of slavery and shines a light on the assumed leaders against racism, who invariably through weariness compromised in their activism to become sellouts, leaving only a few assassinated individuals as true stalwarts for anti black racism.
It calls out unconscious bias, diversity, tokenism, liberalism, classism, used to masks anti racism progress.

Its more than a book to read cogitate and then switch channels, it is a call to action. Citing how others failed in that quest and the pitfalls to avoid. Its the book of the moment, because no one else is whistle blowing, i.e. calling out on racism quite like this.

It is personal in its approach and global in its intent.
For anyone else to quote John Boyega 'f****** sick of racism' this is a guided next step on what to do to start its dismantling.

Excellent

This was very informative and enlightening. This has allowed me to open my mind to understand how society is racist and it is amazing how the victims of racism is expected to solve the problem.

Insightful

It illustrates such an interesting perspective on race relations and perfectly explains why society still has so many issues regarding race. 11/10 definitely worth the listen.

EXCELLENT!

A necessary piece of work to understand the how the world actually works, esp for those of African descent as a result of (the continued) colonialism and imperialism.

very interesting

Another interesting and illuminating read. Includes some recent episodes, such as the Sewell report that hadn't been torn apart enough elsewhere.
