Loved this.
I had never read Graham Green. I absolutely loved this. I can appreciate why the author is so well remembered. This is a beautiful read. Political and social commentary from a British journalist in love in Vietnam. An insight into the past. Simple idea told so well. Very inspiring. Love his metaphors and perspective and voice. Read in a classic style which suits the era and character himself.

Clever and thought-provoking
Western attitudes to South East Asia played out through two character's live of a Vietnamese woman. Clever, thought-provoking and builds to emotive climax.

Stunning and intelligent
Beautifully written in wonderful prose. The story is tragic and devastatingly truthful. One can so easily identify with the characters especially so when added to the appalling lives and deaths of which one should be aware. It also helps when one knows the countries involved and the characteristics of some of those affected.

A view on Vietnam
It was a struggle to get to the end of this book.
I found it very stiff, probably exacerbated by the narrator. Opium pipes, plastics, dodgy Americans and just the jaded view of Vietnam of a cynic.

Excellent- Greene at his best
Extraordinary story telling. Excellent economy of description. Greene loves the trapped plod of the ageing man caught in an affair and unable to escape from his loveless marriage with his high church wife. The section where Fowler breaks his leg is outstanding. Intensely dislike Greene’s view of women but find it nonetheless fascinating.

A good story and well performed, however as other said quality of recording varies with volume increasing and decreasing and a bit crackly in parts

This is the sort you of book you appreciate more as you get older! Simon Cadell as the narrator is brilliant ... I sense a touch of Richard Burton in his tone which sets it off superbly.

Decent Graham Greene book, but crackly recording
Decent Graham Greene book, but crackly recording. Sounds like I’m listening to one of Churchill’s WW2 speeches.
If you want a decent Graham Greene book I think Our Man in Havana is much better, and the audible audiobook is a high quality performance with different speakers.
