Summary
Blandine isn't like the other residents of her building.
An online obituary writer. A young mother with a dark secret. A woman waging a solo campaign against rodents—neighbours, separated only by the thin walls of a low-cost housing complex in the once bustling industrial centre of Vacca Vale, Indiana.
Welcome to the Rabbit Hutch.
Ethereally beautiful and formidably intelligent, Blandine shares her flat with three teenage boys she neither likes nor understands, all, like her, now aged out of the state foster care system that has repeatedly failed them, all searching for meaning in their lives.
Set over one sweltering week in July and culminating in a bizarre act of violence that finally changes everything, The Rabbit Hutch is a savagely beautiful and bitingly funny snapshot of contemporary America, a gorgeous and provocative tale of loneliness and longing, entrapment and, ultimately, freedom.
Critic reviews
"Inventive, heartbreaking and acutely funny." (Guardian)
"Gunty writes with a keen, sensitive eye about all manner of intimacies—the kind we build with other people, and the kind we cultivate around ourselves and our tenuous, private aspirations." (Raven Leilani, author of Luster)

Weird but addictive
The narrators are really good! Sad story but very diverse, intricate and unexpected. Different, long descriptive lists used a bit too often but definitively an intriguing story. Well done.

Promising and intriguing
An intelligent debut novel, of complexity and depth, with colourful and clever characters, and an understanding not only of modern life but an ability to be able to communicate characters intent, and understanding well. A twisting and convoluted menagerie of characters and their story arcs, collide, interact and change. Largely unidentifiable in terms of genre, this is a good and intriguing concept and worth investigating

Strange but compelling.
Very definitely would be found in the cult fiction department. I can see this being made into a film.

Brilliant and wise
A commentary on the underclass of America's Rust Belt, and society in general. This book is wise, funny, heartbreaking
and totally original. Just loved it.

A struggle
Found this book a real struggle. It’s definitely not a book to cheer you up so I could only listen to it once a week. As other reviews have said there are long descriptive sections and letters that don’t feel at all relevant to the plot but more about the authors whims that feel never ending where I would almost lose concentration or get irritated. None of the characters are likeable, all are disturbed or depressed and I also didn’t like the animal cruelty. I found the last couple of hours listening the easiest as at this point most of the characters come together and there is some plot resolution.

Exceptional Debut
Took me a couple chapters to really get going with it but once I was fully in it, I couldn't put it down. I think it took me a bit to get into because I was reading something completely different before this.

This book was not to my taste
I found the narrative disjointed and sensed the author was trying to pack too much in. It has put me off reading more of her work. I found some of the storyline “stereotypical”. It was a book group read, it is not something I would have chosen.
