About this listen

Reginald Iolanthe Perrin, the creation of comedy genius David Nobbs, is surely one of the best-loved comedy heroes of our time – in both literature and television. So it is with great pride that Audible presents Reggie’s escapades in digital audio for the very first time: we invite you to join him, and the memorable supporting characters who help him along the way, on one man’s quest to avoid an everyday existence.

This hilarious sequel to The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin follows his absurd trials and tribulations as he finds himself swept to fame and fortune. After stints in various jobs, Reggie decides to open a shop, called Grot, which proudly announces that everything sold in it is useless. To Reggie’s astonishment, the thing becomes a huge success, with strings of Grot shops throughout Europe. He tries to destroy the monster that he has created, but monsters are not easily defeated.

Having graduated from Cambridge University, David Nobbs entered the army, then tried his hand at journalism and advertising before becoming a writer. A distinguished novelist and comedy writer, Nobbs has written for hit TV comedy shows including The Two Ronnies and created the TV sitcom, The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin, adapted from his own Reginald Perrin comedy novels. He lives near Harrogate with his wife Susan.

An Excellent Sequel

Listening to an audio-book read by the author is a rare privilege, and so it is here. Having thoroughly enjoyed, smiled and laughed along with ‘The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin’ in David Nobbs’ performance, I also did so with ‘The Return’. The developing story Reggie and the related characters is very well done, and Reggie’s empire presses lots of buttons about the way our societies manage to mangle goodness and common sense. And how dysfunctional so many people are in their own ways. The ‘ending’ to the novel is a fascination, and I think I will plug into the third novel pretty quickly. It was nice the way that this audio-book concludes with the substantial opening chapter of ‘The Better World of Reginald Perrin’. David Nobbs’ reading of ‘The Return’ demonstrates the way how, as author, he can manage the flow of the book, each chapter and each paragraph. Wonderful stuff. Nice to see Nobbs drawing on his time working in South Yorkshire. An unexpected treat.
