About this listen

The bond between a mother and her child is the strongest in the natural world. So, why would a young woman, dreaming of America, throw her newborn baby into the waves of the wild Atlantic ocean?

Life in the Scottish Hebrides can be harsh - 'The Edge of the World' some call it. For Kirsty MacLeod, the love of Murdo promises a new life away from the scrape of the land and the repression of the church.

But the Great War looms, and the villages hold a grand 'Road Dance' to send their young men off to battle. As the dancers swirl and sup, Kirsty is overpowered and raped by an unknown assailant. She hides her dark secret, fearful of what it will mean for her and the baby she is carrying. Only the embittered doctor, a man with a cold wife and a colder bed, suspects.

On a fateful day of surging seas and swelling pain, Kirsty learns that her love will never be back. Now, she must make her choice - and it is no choice at all. And the hunt for the baby's mother - and his killer - become one and the same.

The book behind the film!

Watched the film, a great piece of work. Thought I would try the book and was not disappointed = film is very true to the book. Great to have the author narrate it too.

Sgoinneil

Just listened to this without interruption until the end in one go!!! Skillfully raw and authentic … I could easily have been sitting comfortably at an island ceildh listening to a yarn told over a peat fire with the wind hurtling outside. Slainte!

The Road Dance

I loved the story and the writing, I just didn’t enjoy the narration so much.

Brutal but excellent

Powerfully and evocatively written dripping with deep and often hidden emotions and authentically narrated by the author himself

Too much misery

For me , personally, I don’t like to read a book that is so despairing.
6hrs of such sadness was far too much for me.

Author is not a talented narrator

This is a dour story. That, however, is not its failing. I can be quite the fan of a dour story sometimes. But this one is filled with two-dimensional characters and so much narrative that it flows with all the charm of a textbook. And the narration by the author-come-newsreader does absolutely nothing to improve that.
