About this listen

The first three thrillers in the international best-selling Sam Pope series: The Night Shift, The Takers and Long Road Home.

Join the fight.

The explosive series begins with The Night Shift, where ex-sniper Sam Pope leads his own investigation into a bombing at the London Marathon, setting himself on a collision course with some of the most dangerous criminals in London.

The Takers sees Sam continue his one man war on organized crime, as the search for a missing girl leads him into a war with a sickening human trafficking empire.

And lastly, Long Road Home finds Sam in Europe, racing against the clock to locate his former mentor who is being hunted under the suspicion of terrorism.

I enjoyed the storylines.

What prevents these stories from being captivating is the narrator. The narrator's attempts at accents is awful. The black London gangsters terrible not at all believable. And the American and European ones aren't much better. I find his attempts takeaway from the story and can be quite distracting. In fact his narration on the whole is not good. Get a better narrator and the books will be more enjoyable.

Trying to stick with it

Premise is good, storyline OK so far, but my goodness the narration is awful. The bad accents I can live with as it's not easy. But basic word pronunciation should surely be a pre requisite for a narrator? It's like he's never heard some of these word before in his life. And then to compound it, has just guessed at how to pronounce it 😂

Just in case you missed it

At first I thought what a great series a hero who takes a share of licks gets cuts and bruises and gets beaten up from time to time. Totally not like the Americans who win every single fight they have boring, but the author decides that he’s going to force feed us in every single book with a reprise of what happened in the last book which we don’t need because we’re reading the series and then he reprises the promise to his son which is very cheesy, so I get to like the books lesson less because I’m spending more and more time listening to stuff that I already know. Can the author realise that we find this quite condescending as we will manage the continuity through reading each novel in turn.

Entertaining

But gruesome lurching from one yucky event to another. Wish they had a better narrator though. Definitely not the best

Disappointed

Unable to listen to this as I was too distracted by the performance.
For me, there was no punctuation, no break at the end of a paragraph, it was confusing as the narrator would change to a different character, situation, in what seemed to be the same sentence. unfortunately I struggled with with this.

Because it's the right thing to do

Sam Pope takes out very bad people doing terrible things 'because it's the right thing to do'. Loveable hero, compelling story and vividly graphic fight scenes that i thoroughly enjoyed! Cant wait to start book 4

Gets Better

The choice of narrator is a mistake as it seems to be a first time recorder and makes it difficult to stick with the book. If you can just sit and listen ignoring the way the story is read, the story is pretty interesting.

The writing is interesting. I’ve not heard of the author before so this may have been their first book so it’s written as if there was no peer-review to change or remove the cheesy dialogue.

Don’t get me wrong it’s not bad, it’s just not great.

Enunciation lessons for the narrator needed

The narrator's way of clustering words and running out of breath during the sentences makes me wonder how he became one! the stories are not original enough for me to carry on (read 1+ from the first 3 books), although if the narration was brilliant, I probably would.
Echoing some previous reviews: too many repetitions of "muscular arms", "he was a good man", "missing Jamie", "best trained killer", etc.

amazing story, shame about the narrator

the story is amazing, gripping and felt so real, sadly the narrator eats his words and gives a monotone feel, it's hard to feel the difference in characters or narrator.
