Summary
Tea-Bag, a young African girl, has fled a refugee camp in Spain for the promise of a new life in Sweden. Tania has made a long and dangerous journey to escape the horrors of human trafficking. Leyla has come with her family from Iran. All of them are facing different challenges in their new home.
Meanwhile, celebrated poet Jesper Humlin is looking for inspiration. Harried by his mother and girlfriend, misunderstood by his publisher and tormented by his stockbroker, Jesper needs a new perspective on life. A chance encounter with Tea-Bag leads him into the shadow world of the immigrant experience in Sweden. Initially he sees the girls purely as material for his next work, but soon discovers they have very different ideas.
In The Shadow Girls, Henning Mankell tells the extraordinary stories of three young women who are determined to overcome the hardships they face to take control of their own lives. Different
It took me a while to get the hang of this book Was it tongue in cheek, a black comedy, or what But by the end I found it a thoroughly good listen Different and woth perservering with
And of course the delicious voice of Sean Barett

mixed feelings
the more of Henning Mankell's books I listen to, outside of the Wallander series, the more frustrated I become. They are unfinished.

So captivating
This book is so well written and fantastically read by the narrator, you just can't stop the book from playing, The description of the situation of today's immigrants in Sweden is very cruel, but very realistic. As many of Mankell's novels, the end leaves you with a question mark...

Another book from the master
Henning Mankell is one of my favourite authors and this book does not disappoint. It was well read and the characters had depth and were interesting

Worth staying with it.
At first I found this book very difficult to listen to. It was a very strange voice that was, I think intended to create a kind of Swedish feel which was good but did take some getting used to.
I think I would have found it easier to listen to if there had been 2 readers with contrasting voices.
It was a good story though and I was glad I stayed with it.
