Summary

First came the days of the plague. Then came the dreams. Dark dreams that warned of the coming of the dark man. The apostate of death, his worn-down boot heels tramping the night roads. The warlord of the charnel house and Prince of Evil. His time is at hand. His empire grows in the west and the Apocalypse looms.

For hundreds of thousands of fans who read The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are listening to The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival.

King's greatest novel

The long awaited audio release of SK's greatest book. A post-apocalyptic gem that has King's typical weave of immensely detailed characters, immersed in an epic biblical story. Grover Gardner does a great job in the narration and doesn't 'over do' the female characters.I can't recommend this book more highly.

Brilliant

Any additional comments?

I read the book when it first came out so listening to it made it come to life again in new ways. It may be long - but that is part of why it works so well - the amount of detail and description - SK at his best - you will not be disappointed.

I forgot how good this book is

I read the original in the 80's, the uncut edition in the 90's and then re-read again in the last 90's and it has always had a special place in my heart. The audio book doesn't disappoint either - the narrator, while American, is excellent. Don't get me wrong, it wouldn't be right to use a UK narrator anyway, but many of the American narrators grate on me over time - this one doesn't. He does the accents well but is not too over the top or forced in any way.

There is no point in going into the story here - read the synopsis if you must - but to be honest I would imagine most people who buy a near 30 hour audio book have already read the book anyway!

You'd better sit down for The Stand...

Very good indeed. Haven't read the abridged version but this is as complete as it gets. I really enjoy King's long winded approach, although many don't I'm sure! Great story, tremendous characters and very good narration. Great for 48 hours of tedious commuting...

Great book

'The Stand', to me, is definitely one of Stephen King's best books. It's a very gripping tale of a few survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. Each of the main characters has their own struggle - What is the meaning of their existence? Is there any meaning left at all?

Life goes on in any environment. Friendships develop, love develops, rivalries develop.

It is at the same time a stunning description of the fight between good and evil. What makes a person do bad things? What keeps a person from doing bad things? Will evil ultimately defeat good?

Note though that this is an extended remake. The characters are described in more detail and thus it can feel a bit drawn-out. Great listen nevertheless.

A very long but overall good book

I struggled to finish reading this book and left it fallow for several years before i decided to complete it on audible.
It is the masterwork that everyone says it is but the length is so great and the pace so slow that it can be hard to remain engaged in some place. As a study of humanity it is fascinating and, as always with Stephen King, you leave the story feeling like you know the characters as closely as you know your own family. Truly the characters are the best part.
The narrotor of this book has the perfect voice for it and I found his performance to be understated and unobtrusive to the story while still giving the characters distinction.
If you like the long haul, dig in.

Is a review heading optional or required

For the low rental price of £25, you too can enjoy the wonder of mismatched chapter numbering. After renting, you too can discover whether a review heading is optional or required.

Head and shoulders above the rest

If you're going to read an apocalypse story you can't go wrong with The Stand. Epic saga. Beautifully and consistently narrated throughout. The ending is satisfying. The beginning is slow. But stick with it and you will be rewarded.

well read ...

narration is very good, book could do with some re-editing as the story drags in places. Reflective of King's earlier need for many words where one would do.
