About this listen

Ariella Bannon has no choice: she must put her precious children, Liesl and Erich, on that train or allow them to become prey for the Nazis.

Berlin 1939.

When her husband doesn’t come home one day, Ariella realises that the only way she can ensure her Jewish children’s safety is to avail of the Kindertransport, but can she bear to let them go?

A thousand miles away, Elizabeth Klein has closed herself off from the world. Losing her husband on the last day of the Great War, and her child months later, she cannot, will not, love again. It hurts too much.

But she is all Liesl and Erich Bannon have.

Thrown together in the wild countryside of Northern Ireland, Elizabeth and the Bannon children discover that life in the country is anything but tranquil. Danger and intrigue lurk everywhere, and some people are not what they seem.

From the streets of wartime Berlin, to the bombed out city of Liverpool, and finally resting in the lush valleys of the Ards Penisula, The Star and The Shamrock from USA Today bestselling author Jean Grainger, is utterly binge-worthy.

Lovely read

This is the second series I have started to read. I love the the narrators melodic voice. So pleasant to listen too. I found myself wishing I had such a soothing voice. Even though it is fictional book I am sure the facts of how the Irish communities coped during war times and their way of life.has some truth to it.

Excellent story but awful ‘Northern Irish’ Accent

The story is gripping and the narrator has a lovely, gentle voice, so pleasant to listen to. If I had anything at all negative to say it’s only that a large portion of the book is set in Northern Ireland and the narrator has not mastered a Norther Irish accent at all, particularly her ‘Belfast’ accent, which I found toe-curlingy cringey. The accent she does is a sort of “generic Irish accent” (if there was such as thing) and it sounds distinctly south of the border. To be fair, it isn’t an easy accent and in addition almost every town in the North has a different accent, but to a Northern Irish listener it is grating to hear our accent so poorly rendered. Another small thing, but perhaps just as cringe inducing is the mispronunciation of the town name Donaghadee - the narrator pronounces it several times as: “Donadee.” That said, the story is engaging and beautifully written, but I think I might just read the next one, if parts of it are set in Northern Ireland!

Great story

I have read all of Jean Graingers audio books, and have enjoyed them all, and this one was no exception. Its the story of two Jewish children, who find themselves under the protection of an Irish cousin, in Northern Ireland, for the duration of WW2. If I had a criticism - its that the heroine Elizabeth, the cousin, is just too good and always seems to do the right thing. Still there are a few baddies in the story line, to add some balance, but Jean Grainger still manages to find some good in them too. So if you are looking for a feel good historical read - despite the terrible tragedy that befell the Jewish population during the War, then read on and lose yourself for a while.

A heart warming story of love amidst adversity.

I love Jean Grainger’s books and this one did not disappoint. I am looking forward to listening to the Emerald Horizon. I thought Siobhan Waring was wonderful in the many different accents she had to use in the book. I would thoroughly recommend this book.
