Glasgow for Bertie is the promised land. The city of pies and Irn Bru, far from his controlling mother, Irene – his place of escape. But how will he respond to the news of the proposed merging of Edinburgh and Glasgow? A new member of Bertie’s class at school is causing ripples in his social circle. She is called Galactica MacFee and is going to be a match for Olive and her lieutenant, Pansy.
And an incredible new discovery: a Pictish stone that is said to have the first-known written poem carved into it is the talk of the town. But when the poem is eventually translated, it is thought it is best to keep it under wraps.

Chapter 14 - brilliant
As my title states, chapter 14 was excellent; laugh out loud. McCall Smith takes a dig at the removal of the word ‘mother’ from hospital signage and the ridicules foray into various bureaucratic non offensive nonsense-language sweeping the West. This is after a dig at the editing of Blyton/Dahl books to be less offensive. Also enjoyed the nod to the flaws in Rewilding projects. Fun stuff to listen to. Read so wonderfully that the scant storylines are enjoyed.

Disappointed and confused
The last book was poor and this one was worse. Not enough of Bertie and the Irene story was a poor attempt to rectify the mid-step on the last book.
